Construction Industry's Commitment to BIM Use in China Is Strong

New Study by Dodge Data & Analytics in Partnership with Autodesk and Glodon Assesses Growth in Chinese Construction Market

NEW YORK, April 27, 2015 — (PRNewswire) — The Chinese construction market is already well established as a world leader in exceptional, complex projects, and a new study by Dodge Data & Analytics, conducted with the partnership and support of Autodesk and Glodon Software Co., Ltd., suggests that the construction industry in China is also poised to leverage building information modeling (BIM) to improve its productivity and efficiency and the quality and safety of its projects.  To download the new study, visit http://analyticsstore.construction.com/smartmarket-reports/BIMChina.html?sourcekey=PRESREL.

The study findings reveal a dramatic growth in the level of BIM implementation among architects and especially contractors in China who currently use BIM. The percentage of those using BIM on at least 30 percent of their projects will grow in the next two years by 89 percent among architects and 108 percent among contractors. "This level of growth in BIM implementation clearly demonstrates the high degree of value that Chinese architects and contractors who use BIM find that they are getting from it," says Steve Jones, Senior Director of Industry Insights at Dodge Data & Analytics. "Their expected level of engagement with BIM is well above the average from our global BIM study in 2013."

"As a leading advocate for the adoption of BIM in China, we're especially encouraged by the findings of the report showing the rapid deployment of this game-changing process and the software and cloud technologies to support BIM," says Patrick Williams, Senior Vice President of Asia Pacific at Autodesk.

In fact, the benefits reported by contractors using BIM in China are for the most part on par or exceed benefits reported by contractors around the globe in Dodge Data & Analytics's 2013 study, "Business Value of BIM in Major Global Markets."

  • The top business benefit reported by contractors both in China and globally is that using BIM enhances their organization's image as industry leader, with 71 percent of Chinese contractors reporting that they achieve this benefit at a high or very high level.
  • However, the Chinese are global leaders in using BIM to generate faster client approval cycles.
  • Like their global counterparts, three project benefits of BIM are the top-ranked for Chinese contractors:
    • Reduced errors and omissions in construction documents (reported at a high or very high level by 74 percent of Chinese contractors)
    • Better collaboration with other project team organizations (reported by 59 percent)
    • Reduced rework (reported by 59 percent)

"We are very excited to see that construction firms use BIM on a greater proportion of current projects than architects do — an average of 24 percent for construction firms, versus 21 percent for architects.  This shows that BIM application is accelerating in a positive direction, and presents a bigger potential market for us," said Shaoshan Wang, Vice President from Glodon.

Increased engagement with BIM by the construction industry in China is also forecasted by the responses of firms that have not yet used BIM on their projects. 89 percent of non-BIM users in China report having a positive attitude toward BIM, with nearly half of them reporting that they are actively evaluating its use, suggesting that many are likely to become BIM users in the near future. In fact, these findings parallel those of non-users in North America in 2009, and that market saw a dramatic shift in three short years to a wide level of adoption.

The study also features case studies of projects successfully using BIM in China to tackle challenges, as well as insights from owners and thought leaders within the Chinese market about the key factors impacting the use of BIM in China, now and in the future.

In addition to the direct engagement of Autodesk and Glodon, Business Value of BIM in China SmartMarket Report research was conducted in partnership with Tsinghua University and bimSCORE.
