Apr 20, 2015 -- Dewberry, a privately held professional services firm, was selected by the City of Virginia Beach, Virginia, to perform a comprehensive sea level rise (SLR) and recurrent flooding analysis resulting in an adaptation planning study. SLR rates for Virginia Beach are in the top 10 percent of all U.S. cities.
The systematic, watershed-based assessment will develop response plans to offset current and future recurrent flooding issues for susceptible areas within Virginia Beach. The study will include a comprehensive risk assessment of community assets to future flood conditions, which will be used to inform the development of an array of adaptation actions. These activities will be combined with feasibility assessments and benefit-cost ratios to help prioritize strategies, which can best be implemented to improve flood resilience and help to ensure the long-term sustainability of Virginia Beach.
Both the history and economy of Virginia Beach have been fundamentally shaped by its location at the intersection of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean. The same coastal resources that support the communities also pose potential risks to local infrastructure, homes, and businesses. However, proactive planning will allow the City of Virginia Beach to make informed decisions to mitigate these risks.
