Minister Rickford Unveils the New Edition of the Map of Canada

KENORA, ON, April 15, 2015 — (PRNewswire) —

KENORA, ON, April 15, 2015 /CNW/ - The Honourable Greg Rickford, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario, today unveiled the newest edition of the map of Canada at St. Louis School in Kenora, Ontario.

The updated map includes Canada's newly created national parks, winter roads in Northern Canada and official Inuit place names. The map demonstrates the Government of Canada's ongoing commitment to accurately depict Canada's landmass and territorial waters.

The bilingual map of Canada is accessible in downloadable form and a variety of other formats through Canada's Open Data Portal at http://tinyurl.com/jwh8lgt.

Quick Facts

  • The map highlights all national parks and reserves, as well as the 200-mile offshore Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
  • Major roads, railways and ferry routes are depicted, with the Trans-Canada Highway clearly represented across Canada from the Atlantic to the Pacific coasts.
  • For the first time, the map shows winter roads in Northern Canada, which clearly demonstrates how Canadians actively access and use our northern frontiers.
  • Revisions include the use of 2011 population census data, two new national parks (Sable Island National Park Reserve and Naats'ihch'oh National Park Reserve) and new place names — particularly those with their Inuit designations (e.g., Clyde Inlet to Kangiqtugaapik).
