With a consolidated industry, Chilean videogames arrive at the GDC 2015

Currently there are than 300 people working in Chile's local industry, growing over 51% just in the last year. The incipient Chilean videogame development sector has grown almost 200% in size in the last five years.

SAN FRANCISCO, March 2, 2015 — (PRNewswire) — More than 10 Chilean companies will show their progress in videogames at the new edition of the Game Developers Conference (GDC), the most important exhibition in its field in the United States. The companies Abstract Tinker, ACE Team, Amnesia Games, Bekho Team, In Vitro Games, Learning Shift, Mego, Octeto Studios, Studio Pangea, Summersion Studio, Tiny Bytes, Festigame, O'Clock, YouTouch and Pago Maxtron will be representing Chile in this meeting, which is held annually in San Francisco.

Chilean companies expects this to be a productive meeting point with all the publishers and investors related to the industry, in order to position its country as a hub of videogames production in Latin America. "GDC 2015 is the most important annual event for independent companies and development companies of the world. In this event, business meetings are held not only in exhibition, but also in the 'satellite' events. This explains why San Francisco becomes this days the world's center of attention for this sector" says Marcelo Serres, president of the Video Games Association of Chile, VG Chile.

The representative of VG Chile added that "GDC allows us to show our offer to potential clients, which contributes to position Chile as a major player in this industry highly globalized."

Chile has been present at the GDC since 2012, when it became the first Latin American country at the trade show with a country pavilion. "Within the Latin American context, our industry is recognized for its pioneering and creative nature. Chilean game developers companies have managed to carve out a niche in the market, managing to place their products in major countries of the world and in different consumer platforms, ranging from the development of online games to mobile devices" says Rafael Sabat, international deputy director of ProChile.

Lilia Concha, Undersecretary at the National Council for the Arts and Culture of Chile, highlights the importance of Chilean developers having access to this international event. "Chile's had a consistent policy of support, reflection and strategic guidelines in the field of digital content, with special emphasis on the video game industry. We have designed a collaborative work with developers to strengthen its international presence and what can be better than supporting the delegation that will be present at GDC. We are happy that the creators and agents of videogames in Chile can enhance and showcase their work at international platforms and the CNCA is part of that process," she said.

Chilean industry in figures

Just in the last year, Chilean development companies released 46 games for all major platforms, including PC, iOS, Android, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. In addition, during 2014, more than 50 projects were started and are expected to be released either during 2015 or early 2016 for platforms such as PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita.

Currently there are more than 300 people working in Chile's local industry, growing over 51% just in the last year, and the studios are composed of 2015 full-time and close to 110 part-time professionals.

During 2014, a total of 46 videogames were publish, an increase of 24% compared to 2013, targeted primarily to mobiles, web and PC. Over the past year, local enterprises recorded revenues of $ 12.8mm, 83% of which came from projects.
