Conference Activities Fuel Ideas for Resilient Communities

Building Innovation 2015 Day Three

On Day 3 of Building Innovation 2015: The National Institute of Building Sciences Annual Conference and Expo, activities kicked into high gear with the Industry Leadership & Advocacy Symposium, Facility Performance & Sustainability Symposium and the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC) Beyond Green™ Awards Luncheon.

The Industry Leadership & Advocacy Symposium: Leading the Way to High-Performing Communities, sponsored by the American Institute of Architects, focused on how the various segments of the building industry, including state and local regulators; health care systems; finance and insurance organizations; low-vision design advocates; workforce credentialing organizations; off-site construction providers; and many others, can come together to realize buildings in high-performing communities.

At the Facility Performance & Sustainability Symposium: Setting the Foundation for Resilient Communities, sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Precast Association/PCI Northeast, presenters established the connection between performance, sustainability and resilience, and demonstrated how to set performance-based design objectives and analyze results to support decision-making.

The Exhibit Hall was open for its second day, providing attendees another opportunity to learn about the latest products and technologies.

During the Beyond Green™ Awards Luncheon sponsored by Tremco Commercial Sealants & Waterproofing, SBIC recognized the winners of the 2014 Beyond Green™ High-Performance Building and Community Awards. The top prize in the High-Performance Buildings Category went to the Bullitt Center in Seattle, Washington. In the High-Performance Buildings Category, Karuna House received a Merit Award. In the Innovations for High-Performance Buildings & Communities Category, a Merit Award went to the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Center for Building Knowledge for its Smart Supermarkets Program. Also in the Innovations for High-Performance Buildings & Communities Category, a Merit Award went to Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) for its Timber Tower research project.

The Institute also held a CEO Summit during the day.

On the schedule for tonight is the National Institute of Building Sciences Annual Reception and Awards Dinner, where the Institute will feature a retirement celebration honoring Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Office Earle Kennett.

On Day Four, the Conference will conclude with the Plenary Symposium; the FEDCon® Luncheon featuring Keynote Norman Dong, Commissioner, Public Buildings Service at the U.S. General Services Administration; and a Special Session: Ten Years after “Mitigation Saves” – An Examination of the Value of Private-Sector Investment in Mitigation.
