Silicon Image Announces Automotive Grade MHL® Products for the In-Vehicle Infotainment Market

Family of MHL Receivers Enable New Connections Between Smartphones and Automobiles

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — December 15, 2014Silicon Image (NASDAQ: SIMG), a leading provider of multimedia connectivity solutions and services, today announced the introduction of MHL® receivers specifically engineered to address the rigorous demands of the automotive market. These receivers enable smartphones to connect to automotive infotainment systems using MHL, and feature the industry’s most popular video outputs – CSI-2, HDMI® and RGB. Both receivers are AEC Q-100 qualified and feature expanded temperature range support.

Consumers have come to rely on smartphones for all aspects of their lives, including in-vehicle entertainment and apps. With more than 650 million devices shipped to date, including the most popular smartphone models worldwide, MHL has established itself as the de-facto solution for mobile-to-display connectivity. This means automotive manufacturers can have confidence that the MHL systems they install today will span the longevity of the car.

MHL supports up to 4K Ultra HD video, with up to eight channels of digital audio, all while charging the mobile device. The high performance and responsiveness of MHL makes it an ideal connectivity technology for the connected car and infotainment units, enabling drivers to navigate GPS and music apps from the phone. MHL also enhances rear-seat entertainment systems by displaying the latest movies and games from a phone to the rear screen of the car. MHL technology addresses the fundamental issue of connecting two ecosystems with such vastly different development lifecycles as the smartphone and the car by keeping all of the video processing and rendering on the phone as uncompressed video over MHL.

“Car OEMs face the difficult challenges of not only how best to integrate smartphones into their vehicles, but also how to ensure that the integration strategy remains viable throughout the life of the vehicle and multiple generations of smartphones,” said Dominique Bonte, vice president and practice director at ABI Research. “MHL technology is an ideal solution for in-vehicle infotainment as it easily allows consumers to use all of the current apps and personal content stored on a mobile device and take it on the road, all while MHL charges the smartphone when connected to the head unit or rear seat display.”

  • SiI5620: MHL/HDMI receiver with a CSI-2 output

“We’re excited to see more automotive companies selecting MHL technology as a car connectivity solution,” said David Kuo, senior director of marketing at Silicon Image. “Our new family of receivers with MHL technology allows automotive manufacturers to offer in-dash apps, GPS, music, and video playback, with the confidence that uncompressed video solutions will be around for the long haul.”
