Josh Campbell Joins Boundless

Washington, DC, April 28, 2014 - Boundless has hired Joshua Campbell, a leader in geospatial data crowdsourcing, to head the company’s initiatives for data editing and collaboration products. Prior to joining Boundless, Campbell served as GIS Architect and Geographer at the Humanitarian Information Unit of the U.S. Department of State, where he was instrumental in developing data sharing systems used by the U.S. government, partner countries, international and non-governmental organizations, and private companies. He was a key leader in the State Department’s initiatives entitled “Imagery to the Crowd” and “MapGive”, that take commercial satellite imagery purchased by the U.S. government and connect that imagery to the volunteer mapping community to create free and open data for use in humanitarian emergencies, disaster response, and sustainable development.

As Vice President, Product Management, Campbell will lead Boundless’ initiatives to build products for data collaboration, crowdsourcing, and editing. Eddie Pickle, Boundless CEO, remarked on Campbell’s hiring, “Boundless is already a world leader in interoperable web services for publishing maps and apps to the web. Josh Campbell’s leadership will help us expand into better tools for data versioning, editing, sharing, and management.” Campbell joins a technology team headed by CTO, Juan Marin, and will work alongside Paul Ramsey, VP of Product Management for OpenGeo Suite.

Boundless has long been active in developing data editing and collaboration technologies. The company developed the reference implementation of the OGC WFS-T standard, enabling through-the-web data editing, and is well known for its work on the GeoNode data collaboration system. More recently, Boundless has become active in the QGIS community, specifically to aid data creators and analysts. Boundless also developed GeoGit, the open source project that enables decentralized management of versioned data and innovative workflows for collaboration.

When asked about his new role at Boundless, Campbell said, “Boundless has been a key driver for technologies underpinning modern data sharing and collaboration. I’m thrilled to join the team and have the opportunity to make these tools more accessible and broadly used throughout the commercial and government sectors.”

In addition to his work with the State Department, Campbell has 14 years of experience with GIS and Remote Sensing. He is currently completing his Ph.D. in Geography at the University of Kansas, where his research focuses on the intersection of geography, innovation, open source software, and crowdsourcing in the humanitarian domain.
