Optomec to Launch LENS Print Engine for 3D Printed Metals at Additive Manufacturing Conference

Modular LENS Print Engine Upgrades Standard Machine Tools with Metal Additive Manufacturing Capabilities

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — March 11, 2014 — Optomec announced today that the company will unveil details on its LENS Print Engine solution at the Laser Additive Manufacturing (LAM) Conference to be held in Houston, Texas, on March 12-13. The LENS Print Engine, which is a modularized version of the LENS 3D Printing system for metals, can be integrated with standard metal cutting machine tools to easily deploy Additive Manufacturing as part of existing production infrastructures.

Optomec patented LENS technology is a high quality, industry proven process capable of fully printing 3D metal parts, as well as selectively adding material to enhance or repair existing 3D metal parts produced using conventional manufacturing methods.

Recently, Optomec was awarded a contract by America Makes, the nation’s leading and collaborative partner in Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing technology research, to help accelerate US industrial adoption of metal additive manufacturing through the development of the modularized LENS Print Engine. Lockheed Martin Missiles & Fire Control, MachMotion, TechSolve, and the U.S. Army’s Benet Laboratories are partnered with Optomec on this contract.

Dr. Richard Grylls, LENS General Manager, stated, “Since the announcement of the America Makes contract last month, Optomec has received numerous inquiries on the LENS Print Engine and is already engaged with early adopter customers. We think the upcoming LAM conference is an excellent venue to provide more details on the LENS Print Engine to advanced manufacturing practitioners.”

At the LAM conference, Optomec will host a private presentation to provide details on the LENS Print Engine modular components, including powder feeders, deposition heads, tool path generation software, and quality monitoring systems, as well as how these components can be integrated into an existing or new CNC machine tool. The LAM Conference will be held on March 12th and 13th at the Hilton Houston North, in Houston, Texas. The conference brings together industry specialists, executives, users and researchers from around the world to show how laser additive processes can be applied effectively and affordably to today's manufacturing challenges.
