Sumitomo Electric Lightwave Launches Industry’s Fastest and First Touch Screen and Internet Maintenance Handheld Splicer

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — March 10, 2014 — Sumitomo Electric Lightwave ( www.sumitomoelectric.com), a major leader in the design and manufacturing of optical fiber and connectivity solutions, today announced the introduction of the Quantum Type-QH201e-VS handheld fusion splicer, the fourth splicer launched in its Quantum Splicer™ product line. The Quantum Handheld replaces the TomCatType-25eU/S/M with added advanced industry-only automated features for affordable, user-friendly and high performance fusion splices for FTTx, data center, and other communication network applications.

The Quantum Handheld V-groove splicer boasts the industry’s smallest footprint (110Wx140Dx76Hmm) for maximum portability and the fastest 12 second typical splice time among handheld splicers for improved efficiency in space constrained areas typical with FTTx and data center work areas. The new Quantum Type-QH201e-VS offers the most advanced splicing technology as evidenced by industry-only features that heighten the splicing experience for installers and technicians:

  • Fully navigational touch screen interface for maximum user friendliness (traditional keypad also included)
  • Internet Interface for 24-7 remote diagnostic and maintenance with Sumitomo Electric Lightwave On-Time Service Center technicians
  • SD port for virtually unlimited data storage for software, training, video, and audio uploads/downloads

“Our goal is to innovate continuously to offer customers the most advanced and reliable fusion splicer technology backed by the most expert and responsive support and service,” comments Dwayne Holst, product manager at Sumitomo Electric Lightwave. “As the only company to offer internet capable 24-7 remote maintenance and service, this exemplifies our commitment to unprecedented customer support.”

The small footprint of the Quantum Handheld does not compromise the rugged design of the splicer that complies with the most stringent shock, waterproof, and dust resistance requirements. Other features of this RoHS compliant splicer include an easy to use fiber holder system, extended life electrodes, built-in help and maintenance videos, and Lynx2 CustomFit® Splice-On Connector compatibility.

The new Quantum Type-QH201e-VS will be unveiled at OFC 2014, booth 3845, on March 11-13 in San Francisco, CA.
