EVANSTON, Ill. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — February 11, 2014 — For a third straight year, South Dakota gained manufacturing jobs, reports the 2014 South Dakota Manufacturers Register®, an industrial directory and database published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI). According to data collected by MNI, manufacturers in South Dakota added 652 jobs from Nov. 2012 to Nov. 2013, or 1.3%.
Manufacturers’ News reports South Dakota is home to 1,337 manufacturers employing 48,471 workers.
“With its business-friendly environment and abundant natural resources, manufacturers in South Dakota continue to make gains,” says Tom Dubin, President of the 102-year old industrial publisher.
According to MNI, food products manufacturing ranks first in the state for industrial employment, employing 8,956, up one percent over the year. Additional sectors reporting gains included rubber/plastics, up 4.3%; transportation equipment, up 3.7%; paper products, up 2.1%; and chemicals, up 1.8%.
Losses were seen in lumber/wood, down 10%; textiles/apparel down 7.8%; and furniture/fixtures, down 4.2%.

South Dakota’s Southeast region accounts for the most factory employment in the state, with 25,741 jobs, up 1%. Jobs in the Northeast region climbed 3.1%; were up a half percent in the Southwest region, and declined 6.7% in the Northwest, according to MNI.
Manufacturing employment in Sioux Falls was up 3.6%, with the city home to 12,114 jobs. Industrial jobs were up 5.4% in Watertown; up 1.6% in Aberdeen and up one percent in Rapid City, reports MNI.
