Started in February 2011, the project consists of updating the country’s map coverage at a scale of 1: 200 000 in order to complete a national database and topographic maps covering the entire country. A ceremony of delivery of the first new maps was organized in Ouagadougou on January, 30th.
February 6th, 2014 -- The official ceremony of delivery of the 13 first new maps completed in the framework of the upgrading of Burkina’s general map, took place in Ouagadougou January 30th on behalf of the President of the National assembly and of the Ambassador of the European Union.
This event gathered around 100 participants among which can be mentioned several representatives from the government, the national Defence and from the public and private sectors.
Right after the interventions of the European Union Ambassador and of the Ministry of Infrastructures, the IGB (Survey of Burkina Faso) General director presented the new maps and compared them with the old ones highlighting the changes at the territorial scale.
Copies of the new maps were given to the local authorities and a visit of the exhibition of the 13 new maps was organized.
Initiated in February 2011, this project is carried out by the Burkina Faso mapping institute (IGB) with the technical assistance of IGN France International. It aims to update the entire country’s coverage at a scale of 1:200 000 and to complete a national database.
The entire production is carried out on site at the IGB premises and by IGB’s staff in the framework of a transfer of technology set up by IGN France International.
The delivery of the new national maps marks the recognition of the survey of Burkina (IGB) as the national reference organization in term of geographic information.
Newly fitted and supported by a performing and motivating staff, IGB has acquired new work methodologies and is now able to play its entire role to provide all key decision makers involved in the economic development of Burkina, with reliable and coherent data.
A final seminar will end up the project in September 2014. By this date, the new data base will cover the entire country and 14 maps of the Eastern part of Burkina will be produced in addition to the 13 maps already delivered at the occasion of the seminar.
