Energy-Efficient, VoIP-Enhanced Fax Modem Chips from Conexant Make Multi-Function Printers Smarter

New Product Family Brings up to Forty Percent Reduction in Power and Best-in-Class VoIP Performance

LAS VEGAS — (BUSINESS WIRE) — January 7, 2014 — Today at the 2014 International CES, Conexant Systems Inc., an audio and imaging innovation leader, announced a new family of low-power, VoIP-enhanced fax modem chips: the CX95710, a data pump solution, and CX95810, an AT command device. Both products are part of Conexant’s ImagingSmart™ solutions and offer advanced low power modes - exceeding stringent Energy Star 2.0 requirements - and enhanced VoIP performance to support the growing demand for VoIP network solutions. In addition, the new product family brings optimal host interface through Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI), and support for Conexant’s CX20548 SmartDAA® 4 Line Side Device - the industry’s most highly integrated Worldwide Direct Access Arrangement (DAA) solution.

Energy-efficient products are smarter - they reduce carbon footprints, conserve resources and minimize environmental impact - all while lowering operating costs. With a goal to achieve the lowest power and greatest level of energy efficiency, Conexant set out to enhance its fax modem products to exceed Energy Star 2.0 requirements. For multi-function printer (MFP) manufacturers seeking to reduce power consumption wherever possible, the most advanced energy saving technologies available are required. One critical function in an MFP that can benefit from enhancements in power consumption is stand-by power utilization. Recognizing this, Conexant designed both the CX95710 and CX95810 to enable up to 40 percent power reduction over previous generations - while still maintaining optimal performance. This was achieved by employing advanced design techniques, clock gating, advanced clock management in low power states, and integration of an optional charge pump for maximum efficiency.

With the impending sunset of the traditional PSTN network, the communications landscape is quickly evolving into an IP market, and ensuring that fax and data modems work reliably over an IP network is critical. Conexant’s new fax modem product family offers best-in-class VoIP performance optimized for both traditional analog phone lines and VoIP networks. With more fax modem market share than any other provider, Conexant’s product development team has embraced the shifting communications landscape and drive toward VoIP networks in both the commercial/professional and consumer/home markets. To ensure performance and reliability excellence, Conexant performs VoIP testing against the ITU-T G.1050 standard. In testing against the ITU-T G.1050 model, the CX95710 demonstrated a superior 97 percent V.34 connectivity over an enterprise network - far eclipsing any other fax modem on the market today.

The CX95710, a data pump (controller-less) solution, supports the same field-proven firmware of previous generations – enabling a straightforward design migration. The CX95810, an AT command controller solution, allows for further ease of design and brings Conexant’s class-leading fax architecture to a wider audience not familiar with data pump designs. The CX95810 leverages the proven AT command controller from Conexant’s popular data modems and allows simple programming of the fax modem through standard AT commands.

According to Kenneth Chuang, GM for Conexant’s fax and modem unit, “All of our ImagingSmart solutions are designed from the ground up with our customers in mind, and fax modems are no exception. Conexant looks at the total system both in terms of cost and design and embedded software development effort. We have a long history of technological innovation and leadership in modem technology, and are committed to investing in and supporting the fax modem market. Our fax solutions ensure quality fax operation over evolving IP networks the world over.”
