Ikanos Velocity(R)-Uni VDSL2 Chipset Selected by Tier-One OEM to Enable Fiber-to-the-Distribution-Point (FTTdp) Applications

FREMONT, CA -- (Marketwired) -- Nov 18, 2013 -- Ikanos Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: IKAN), a leading provider of advanced broadband semiconductor and software products for the digital home, today announced that a tier-one OEM has selected the latest member of the Ikanos Velocity® processor family, Velocity™-Uni, for its next-generation Passive Optical Network (PON) Optical Network Terminal (ONT) targeting FTTdp deployments. The combined unit functions as a media converter, terminating a PON fiber access line at the neighborhood distribution point and connecting to a standards-based VDSL2 gateway in the subscriber's residence. The single-port Velocity™-Uni, when used in tandem with a Fusiv® Vx185-based home gateway, can deliver up to 300Mbps aggregate (combining upstream and downstream) line rate in FTTdp applications, at a distance of up to 200 meters. In addition, the low-power operation of Velocity™-Uni enables reverse powering, in which the power needed for the media converter is supplied by the home gateway over the same copper line carrying the VDSL2 service.

The superior performance of the Velocity™-Uni VDSL2 chipset enables carriers to leverage their existing copper infrastructure for FTTdp applications -- where extending fiber from the distribution point to the subscriber's residence is either prohibitively expensive or the subscriber refuses to allow underground trenching through his property, connection through exterior walls, or in-residence fiber runs. With Velocity™-Uni's 300Mbps aggregate line rate capability up to a distance of 200 meters, carriers can support a performance level comparable to that of fiber, at a fraction of the cost, for applications in which fiber cannot be extended to an ONT inside the subscriber's residence.
