Esri to Co-Host GIS Day at the University of Redlands

Redlands, California November 6, 2013—Esri will co-host a  GIS Day celebration with the  University of Redlands and the  City of Redlands on November 20, 2013, 1:00 p.m.–7:45 p.m., on the university campus. All events are free and open to the public.

GIS Day provides an international forum for users of geographic information system (GIS) technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society.

Every year in November, GIS Day is celebrated around the world.

"GIS Day is an excellent initiative for people to learn about geography and the uses of GIS," said Esri president Jack Dangermond. "Everyone is welcome to participate, and we are grateful to the City of Redlands and the University of Redlands for co-hosting the event with Esri."

“University of Redlands uses spatial reasoning infused throughout the institution to enhance curriculum, research and operations. We’re pleased to partner with Esri and the City of Redlands to educate our local community about the power of GIS and showcase the work of our students and faculty,” said University of Redlands President, Ralph Kuncl.

GIS Day activities will begin with an open house at Hunsaker Plaza and include the following:

  • Hands-on mapping, technology demonstrations, and University of Redlands student and faculty project posters
  • Information regarding the City of Redlands' award-winning 311 smartphone app for geotagging and reporting problems
  • Refreshments, free maps, and other GIS-themed giveaways

The open house will be followed at 4:00 p.m. by a colloquium at Gregory Hall room 161 sponsored by the Master of Science in Geographic Information Systems (MS GIS) program at the University of Redlands. During the colloquium, students will share a variety of innovative GIS applications that are solving problems for clients around the world. A guest lecture at 6:15 p.m. at the Casa Loma Room sponsored by the Center for Business GIS and Spatial Analysis will feature Dr. Hal Nelson, research assistant professor, School of Politics and Economics, Claremont Graduate University. Dr. Nelson will present "Getting to Yes? The Sustainable Energy Modeling Program, a Decision Support System for Infrastructure Siting." The lecture will be preceded by dinner at 5:30 p.m.

Inspired by the renowned activist Ralph Nader, the first formal GIS Day took place in 1999. For more information, visit  gisday.com/redlands.
