Nova Scotia’s natural gas provider uses Esri technology to support operations, providing a platform for effective customer service and intelligent growth
HALIFAX, Esri Canada User Conference – November 5, 2013 – Since Heritage Gas was established in 2003, they have used Esri’s enterprise geographic information system (GIS) technology to store all their operational and customer data and provide access to it across their organization. Through the GIS, they have built several internal and external Web apps that support the efficient delivery of services and improve decision-making. For their outstanding use of GIS, Esri Canada today presented Heritage Gas with an Award of Excellence.
“From the start, Heritage Gas had a clear vision for their enterprise GIS,” says Alex Miller, president, Esri Canada. “They wanted to make all their information digital and manage it centrally. Using GIS to support all aspects of their operations has allowed them to apply geospatial intelligence and increase efficiency throughout their organization. This, in turn, is helping them become an intelligent utility.”
“GIS is critical to our operations,” notes Craig Power, information systems specialist, Heritage Gas. “It allows us to have all our data in one place so that everyone in the company can access and use it to do their work. Being able to see the contents of our database visually as a map makes it easier to analyze data and make decisions. It also helps us to effectively plan where we’ll grow our network.”
To support customer management processes, Heritage Gas uses Esri’s ArcGIS for Server technology for their customer information system (CIS). Customers can also look up service availability in their area through a self-service app on Heritage Gas’ web site. The app shows the locations of existing and planned natural gas pipelines in Nova Scotia.
GIS is also used to inform the utility’s expansion plans. Heritage Gas uses GIS to conduct financial modeling and compare commercial and residential interest before they decide on where to build additional pipelines.
