NOLA Utilizes Everbridge Geo-Targeting Capabilities for Map-Based Emergency Notifications

GLENDALE, Calif. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — November 4, 2013Everbridge, the leading provider of critical communication solutions, delivers geo-targeting capabilities for the City of New Orleans (NOLA), a popular tourist hub that hosts thousands of visitors annually for Mardi Gras season and other major events. During Mardi Gras celebrations, hurricanes, and other non-emergency and critical situations, NOLA officials utilize Everbridge to send map-based alerts in a particular geographic area or ZIP code. Everbridge creates maps based on ZIP codes and geographical end neighborhoods and sets up an overlay cover to map out alerts, ensuring affected individuals in NOLA receive vital information in crises.

With Everbridge, users can upload any number of contacts, millions if necessary, and automatically geo-code those contacts based on their location. Everbridge assigns a latitude and longitude to contacts, so they always appear as dots on a map. The map's predefined shapes represent ZIP codes or specific neighborhoods, and NOLA officials leverage these shapes to draw maps on-the-fly or use maps that are generated based on weather alerts. Any contacts that fall within those shapes can easily be contacted either automatically through different rules and alerts that have already been set up or on-the-fly.

In addition to geo-targeting capabilities, Everbridge provides filters for NOLA administrators to contact only specific groups of people. NOLA officials can customize their groups however they choose by defining virtually any set of attributes and tailor their messages to reach groups with certain skill sets, such as medical personnel with specific skills.

“New Orleans is an event-driven city, so we use the Everbridge system nearly every week to communicate with residents and visitors. In addition to this, our fire and EMS departments use the system daily. We are always in need of some form of communication with our residents or internally with our employees, and the Everbridge system is the one we choose for every situation," said Paul J. Reeb, NOLA emergency management services coordinator.

"Everbridge is really virtually unlimited. We support over 20 different delivery paths and methods, including cell phones, SMS, email, work phones, fax, pagers, the mobile recipient application, etc. All of those are valid contact paths. You can set up more than one contact path as well. So from that perspective, it’s pretty much unlimited," said Claudia Dent, vice president of product management, Everbridge.
