Ittiam’s HEVC Decoder for Smartphones, Tablets and Home Entertainment to Be Showcased at ARM TechCon 2013

Ittiam to demonstrate its low power HEVC decoder optimized for ARM Mali™ GPU Compute and ARM® Cortex®-A processors

BANGALORE, India — (BUSINESS WIRE) — October 23, 2013 — Ittiam’s software High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) aka H.265 decoder will be showcased at ARM TechCon from 29th to 31st October at Santa Clara. Ittiam’s software decoder, with support for up to 4K resolutions, enables HEVC playback on a wide range of end-points, targeting consumer devices such as set-top boxes, TVs, smartphones and tablets powered by ARM Cortex processors.

Ittiam’s  HEVC decoder has been designed to take advantage of the full capabilities of mobile SoCs, this includes the media capabilities of the NEON™ SIMD engine and multi-threading, to exploit data and functional parallelism on  ARM Cortex microprocessor cores. The decoder implementation is load balanced and scalable across single and multi-core devices.

With a goal of maintaining overall battery life, Ittiam’s software decoder also takes advantage of the great computational power and energy efficiency of GPUs. By identifying operations that are highly parallel and offloading these to the ARM Mali-T600 GPU using OpenCL, a significant improvement in performance is achieved, and through a more effective use of the combined GPU and CPU resources resulted in a more power efficient HEVC decoder.

Dr. Sriram Sethuraman, Ittiam Fellow and Chief Technology Officer, said, "HEVC promises up to 50% reduction in streaming and storage bandwidth but this is achieved through significantly more complex tools in the coding scheme. The increased complexity has a direct impact on power consumption; hence there is a need for power efficient decoders to drive the adoption of HEVC in mobile devices. Ittiam’s strong focus on HEVC technology and deep expertise in ARM and Mali GPU Compute architectures has enabled it to deliver power-efficient software decoders on ARM Cortex microprocessor along with ARM Mali-T600 GPUs.”

“For ARM-based solutions to remain at the heart of the multi-platform viewing experience, it is critical that they quickly evolve to support emerging technologies,” said Nizar Romdhane, director of ecosystem, Media Processing Division, ARM. “The Ittiam HEVC technology to be showcased at TechCon 2013 shows how the superior performance and energy efficiency of ARM Mali GPU Compute and ARM Cortex-A processing technologies can benefit consumers faster than ever before. We look forward to working closely with Ittiam to help content creators and manufacturers deliver the compelling multi-platform video experiences of the future.”
