Velocity-Uni is architected for applications in which very high data rates are required, but achieving those rates with FTTH may not be practical -- due to a variety of obstacles including high installation cost, or a homeowner's refusal to allow trenching or cutting through walls to extend fiber into the home. With Ikanos' new chipset, carriers can extend fiber to a distribution point close to the home, and then convert the optical signal to VDSL2 using a GPON Optical Network Terminal (ONT) and a Velocity-Uni. The unique architecture of the Ikanos CO and CPE VDSL chipset allows these rates to reach an aggregate 300Mbps on a single copper pair, which is comparable to data rates supported over FTTH, while maintaining full compliance with the VDSL2 standard.
"Carriers are constantly looking for new ways to leverage the installed base of one billion+ copper lines deployed globally to deliver ever-increasing data rates and new revenue-generating services to their subscribers," said Jag Bolaria, Sr. Analyst, The Linley Group. "While their end game may be FTTH, they need to offer progressively better bandwidth to retain customers while upgrading their infrastructure to fiber. Ikanos, with its Velocity product family, enables new levels of performance on standard copper lines to meet the bandwidth requirements of carriers and subscribers."
"High-bandwidth consumer applications and devices are driving the need for faster broadband networks, and carriers are moving rapidly to re-architect their networks to meet the demand," said Omid Tahernia, CEO of Ikanos. "At Ikanos, we continue to stay ahead of the curve, and are delivering solutions that anticipate the market need before it arises. While the standard body is putting the finishing touches on the G.fast specification and the industry prepares for the migration to gigabit access, Ikanos CO and CPE products are here today and ready to enable carriers with the highest data rates seen on standard copper lines to date, as the bandwidth wars continue to heat up in the increasingly competitive broadband access landscape."
Availability
Velocity-Uni samples are available now, with volume production expected in the first quarter of 2014. Complementary Ikanos Fusiv® Vx185 gateway processors are already in volume production in VDSL gateways by multiple top tier carriers worldwide.
