Analog Devices and Indian Institute of Science Collaborate to Spur Innovation in Research and Development of MEMS and Nano Science in India

BANGALORE, India — (BUSINESS WIRE) — September 30, 2013Analog Devices Inc. (ADI), the global leader in high-performance semiconductors for signal-processing and signal-conditioning applications, has joined the Industry Affiliate Program of the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering (CeNSE) of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), to infuse innovation, provide industry insights, and accelerate commercialization of active research in MEMS (Micromachines) and Nano-Sciences in India.

Analog Devices has been a pioneer with many “industry firsts” in its five decades of innovation, starting from the first ever use of laser-trim systems to tweak IC performance, to pioneering the use of inertial MEMS in automotive airbags. In just the last few years, Analog Devices has launched the industry’s first octal ultrasound receiver; lowest power and smallest size heart-rate monitor chip; industry’s lowest power MEMS accelerometer and a lowest-noise MEMS microphone. Analog Devices India was started in 1995 and its product development center in Bangalore is involved in some of the most challenging designs including complex Application-Specific Standard Products (ASSPs), high performance DSPs, Analog/Mixed Signal ICs, signal processing ASICs for inertial MEMS, and embedded software that power these semiconductor chips.

The Centre for Nano Science and Engineering (CeNSE) was established in 2010 to pursue interdisciplinary research across several disciplines with a focus on nano-scale systems. Current research topics include nano-electronics, MEMS/NEMS, nano-materials and devices, photonics, nano-biotechnology, solar cells and computational nano-engineering. With its National Nano-fabrication Facility spanning 14, 000 sq. ft., CeNSE is well equipped to undertake research projects aimed at solving real life problems in collaboration with the industry. As a part of the affiliate program, ADI will work with CeNSE to bridge the gap between industry and research by initiating a close technical association and identifying core areas for long term collaboration in co-development of technologies and products of mutual interest. The program is designed to ensure a deeper engagement through joint research projects and unique student support programs involving the company, faculty and student community at CeNSE.

“We are delighted to have a company like Analog Devices, which has been at the forefront of innovation for decades, as a partner of CeNSE,” noted Professor Rudra Pratap, founder-Chairperson of CeNSE. “ADI’s partnership will give CeNSE much closer ties with the industry - enable our researchers to work directly on industry problems, help translate cutting-edge research and technological innovation into products and services, and to commercialize them successfully.”

Speaking about the association, Somshubhro (Som) Pal Choudhury, Managing Director of Analog Devices India stated, “It is an incredible achievement by CeNSE to have set up such a high-end interdisciplinary research effort, and a world class nano-fabrication and characterization facility. As a partner of CeNSE, Analog Devices will provide product focus to researchers and aim for much closer ties to co-design and co-develop leading edge industry solutions.”
