US Route 460 Corridor Improvements Project- One of the Largest in the State in Years
CHANTILLY, Va. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — June 13, 2013 — Bowman Consulting today announced it has been awarded two contracts as part of the $1.4 billion Public-Private Transportation Act (PPTA) project developed by The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The U.S. Route 460 Corridor Improvement Project entails new construction of approximately 55 miles of four-lane divided limited-access highway between Petersburg and Suffolk Virginia and is one of the largest contracts of its kind in recent years.
Bowman Consulting will be working with U.S. 460 Mobility Partners, a joint venture between Ferrovial Agroman, S.A. and American Infrastructure, to provide complete roadway and bridge design for the eastern third of the highway and will also provide survey and environmental services for the eastern half of the project. Bowman Consulting was also on the pre-award team to help U.S. 460 Mobility Partners win the VDOT contract by providing a detailed GIS inventory of right-of-way (ROW) and relocations in preparation for this large scale project. The overall Project will extend from the existing U.S. Route 460 near its interchange with Interstate 295 (I-295) in Prince George County to the U.S. Route 58 bypass just south of the existing U.S. Route 460 in the City of Suffolk. Bowmans design portion of the project will extend from just west of Route 614 to Route 58 and consist of 29 bridge structures, retaining walls, noise walls, and culverts. It also includes the Route 58 eastern termini and Route 258 interchanges. The project is expected to bring significant short-term and long-term benefits to the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The award of this contract is a testament to the expertise and vast resources the Bowman team can bring to major engineering projects, said Spencer Francis, regional manager at Bowman Consulting. We are pleased to be working with VDOT as we expand our reach from a regional engineering firm to a national full service engineering firm.
Bowman Consulting provides a full spectrum of transportation services for private and public markets throughout the country, including highway, transit, aviation, bridge and traffic engineering. The company also possesses a depth of surveying resources across many industries that employ the most advanced technology and instrumentation.
The Bowman team has been heavily involved in the preparation and planning of this project, added Francis. With this experience combined with the expertise our team has from working on similar interstate and toll road projects, we are confident in our ability to deliver every aspect of the project which will ultimately reduce travel time, improve travel safety, increase efficiency and enhance regional connectivity.
From this project there will be far-reaching economic impact to the area by generating 4,000 construction jobs, 18,000 jobs long term due to new business attraction and overall economic development, and boosted tourism. Finally, the project will result in greater freight traffic, expanded hurricane evacuation routes and enhanced connectivity for Virginias military installations.
The U.S. Route 460 Corridor Improvement Project is expected to extend for five years with construction beginning in 2014 and the new highway opening to traffic in 2018. To learn more about this project visit http://www.route460ppta.org/about_this_project.asp.
