WILSONVILLE, Ore. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — May 31, 2013 — Mentor Graphics Corporation (NASDAQ: MENT) today announced that Dr. Andras Poppe of Mentor Graphics and the Budapest University of Technology has been recognized by the JEDEC international standards organization for his significant contributions to the JESD51-5x series of thermal testing standards for Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs). The series of standards are the industry’s first international thermal testing standards targeting thermal characterization of power LED components, which will benefit both LED manufacturers and LED integrators worldwide.
“JEDEC standards are utilized worldwide and enable innovation, grow markets and lead to more efficient R&D,” stated John J. Kelly, president of JEDEC. “JEDEC congratulates Andras Poppe on this well-deserved honor, and we also express our gratitude to Mentor Graphics for its support of the development of open industry standards.”
Prior to the publication of the JESD51-5x series of standards, LED manufacturers and assembly/packaging companies had to rely on datasheet information, which was often questionable. Dr. Poppe’s active involvement in the JEDEC JESD51-5x standards series (which include JESD51-50, JESD51-51, JESD51-52 and JESD51-53) focused on standardizing thermal characterization measurement of power LED components. Dr. Poppe applied his expertise in thermal and radiometric/photometric characterization of high-power LEDs to help the consortium select the most appropriate methods of measurement.
In addition to his JEDEC standards contributions, Dr. Poppe is also active on the CIE-TC2-63 and CIE-TC2-64 standards committees and recently received the Harvey Rosten Award for Excellence in the Physical Design of Electronics on March 21, 2013, at the IEEE Semi-Therm 2013 Conference. Dr. Poppe is also an associate professor at the Budapest University of Physics, Department of Electron Devices. His fields of interest include thermal transient testing of packaged semiconductor devices, compact thermal modeling of semiconductor packages, characterization of LEDs and OLEDs, and electro-thermal simulation.
“We are proud of Andras Poppe’s technical contributions to the JESD51-5x series realizing the huge impact this has on the LED industry,” stated Dr. Erich Buergel, general manager of the Mechanical Analysis Division of Mentor Graphics. “His expertise and tireless commitment to serve JEDEC and other standards bodies is impressive, and we are very proud of his tremendous achievements.”
