Zeton Inc. Wins 2012 Bentley Be Inspired Award for Modular GTL Commercial Demonstration Plant Project

Was Recognized for Use of 3D Modeling During Fabrication to Improve Accuracy and Reduce Rework, Enabling Project Completion in Less than 18 Months

BURLINGTON, Ontario, Canada – January 3, 2013 Zeton Inc., the world’s leading designer and builder of innovative lab scale systems, pilot plants, demonstration plants and small modular commercial plants, today announced that the Modular GTL Commercial Demonstration Plant project for CompactGTL commissioned in Aracaju, Brazil, has won a 2012 Be Inspired Award from Bentley Systems, Incorporated. Bentley is the leading company dedicated to providing comprehensive software solutions for sustaining infrastructure. The project won in the “Innovation in Process Manufacturing” category. The recipients of Be Inspired Awards are selected by independent panels of jurors comprising accomplished Bentley users and distinguished industry experts. The awards honor the extraordinary work of Bentley users improving and sustaining the world’s infrastructure, recognizing outstanding and innovative project achievements in infrastructure design, construction, and operations.

Commenting on the award presented to Zeton, Anne-Marie Walters, Bentley Global Marketing Director, Industrial Process and Operations, said, “The winner in the ‘Innovation in Process Manufacturing’ award category demonstrates excellence in the planning, engineering, construction, and operations of a process manufacturing facility and exhibits technical innovation, good project management, and a clear return on investment.

“Zeton engineered and constructed the balance of plant for the world’s first modular gas-to-liquids (GTL) commercial demonstration plant using CompactGTL’s mini-channel reactor technology. The USD 45 million plant incorporated all aspects required for commercial application in treating flare gas at onshore and offshore oil fields. Tight integration between design and analysis enabled Zeton to develop a compact plant that was able to achieve the required complex gas-to-liquids conversion cost effectively. Access to a real-time 3D model during fabrication improved accuracy and reduced rework, enabling Zeton to complete the project from start to finish in less than 18 months.

“The Zeton design team employed Bentley’s AutoPLANT to provide the robust 3D plant modeling solution required to scale GTL technology from pilot to commercial, and to allow team members on four continents to work smarter, together, to design this compact, modular GTL plant. Zeton also used Bentley AutoPIPE for pipe stress analysis and ProStructures for structural steel design."

“The judges determined that this project represented a highly innovative solution to the challenge of utilizing waste flare gas into a project enabling product. They further acknowledged its complexity, involving a compact modular structure, requirements for resilience to very high temperatures, and all welded pipe fabrication. On behalf of my colleagues at Bentley, I congratulate Zeton on this extraordinary accomplishment!”

David Edwards, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Zeton, said, “That this project should take top honors in the Be Inspired Awards program is a source of pride for everyone involved in the project, and is a testament to the extraordinary achievements of the project teams at Zeton and CompactGTL. From an engineering perspective, this was an exciting and challenging project, where the requirements for a compact, modular layout for future commercial scale implementation superimposed fundamental constraints on the design and routing of the hot reformer piping operating at 1500 °F. The application of Bentley AutoPLANT and AutoPIPE design tools, in combination, was a key factor in the project’s success, and we would like to thank Bentley for recognizing the innovative and groundbreaking engineering work that went into completing this project. Given the strength of the submissions to this year’s competition, we are truly honored to be recognized alongside the other 2012 Be Inspired Awards recipients.”

About Be Inspired Awards Program

Since 2004, the Be Inspired Awards competition has showcased excellence and innovation in the design, construction, and operations of architecture and engineering infrastructure projects around the world. The Be Inspired Awards is unique – the only competition of its kind that is global in scope and comprehensive in categories covered, encompassing all types of infrastructure projects. In the awards program, which is open to all users of Bentley software, independent panels of industry experts select finalists and a winner for each category.

The awards are presented during a ceremony at Be Inspired: Innovations in Infrastructure, an invitation-only conference that provides a unique forum for senior-level executives to learn about the innovations driving the development and operations of the world’s top infrastructure projects. The 2012 Be Inspired Awards ceremony recognized outstanding achievement and innovation in infrastructure design, construction, and operations by winners selected from 58 project finalists by five independent panels of jurors. In total, nominations from more than 250 organizations in 39 countries were submitted in the 2012 awards program.
