New Book from Esri Press Advances GIS for Economic Development

A new book from Esri Press explains the use of GIS to further economic development.

Redlands, California—November 12, 2012—Applying the geographic approach to problem solving originally proposed by Esri president Jack Dangermond, Economic Development and GIS by J. M. Pogodzinski and Richard M. Kos, AICP, examines the many ways GIS can be used to further economic development.

"The highlight is the seamless integration of chapters contributed by practitioners and development specialists to show why advanced techniques are used to address a host of problems in theory and practice," said John M. Quigley, I. Donald Terner Distinguished Professor, University of California, Berkeley. "As a blend of new ideas and applications, the book is a treatise on the power of GIS to help organize problems for systematic analysis."

The book describes policy problems in economic development and presents methods and techniques to solve them with GIS, providing a greater understanding of the application of geospatial technology to decision making.

"GIS is an essential tool in analysis because of its data management and data manipulation capabilities, analytic tools, potential for reporting and collaboration, and scalability," write the authors. "GIS is the spatial equivalent of a spreadsheet. Many of the most routine problems that arise in economic development analysis can be done better and more quickly with GIS than without it—and some problems can only be solved with GIS."

Pogodzinski is a professor of economics at San Jose State University in California. He served as a consultant to the US Treasury Department on estimating tax revenues in developing countries and to the General Accountability Office on the impact of federal programs on urban sprawl. Kos is a certified urban planner specializing in the use of GIS to study land-use change, alternatives to suburban sprawl, and public transportation. He teaches graduate-level courses in community-directed urban planning and GIS at San Jose State University.
