SAN ANTONIO — (BUSINESS WIRE) — June 20, 2012 — Mentor Graphics Corporation (NASDAQ: MENT) today announced the addition of hibernate mode to its flagship Mentor® Embedded Nucleus® real time operating system (RTOS) Power Management Framework. Using the Nucleus RTOS, embedded software developers can minimize power consumption by taking advantage of the latest power saving technology, including dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS), clock gating and standby, and hibernate states—common in today’s processors. The first in a line of industry-leading devices to be supported with hibernate capability of the Nucleus Power Management Framework is the Freescale i.MX family of multimedia processors.
“Our customers can minimize power consumption and maximize the life of battery-operated devices with Mentor’s innovative Nucleus Power Management Framework and newly introduced hibernate/standby capability,” said David Patterson, vice president and general manager of Freescale’s Multimedia Applications Group. “Mentor’s power-aware board support package enables engineers to take advantage of power optimization capabilities of devices like the Freescale i.MX28, resulting in a differentiated platform solution.”
The Nucleus Power Management Framework with hibernate supports the latest microprocessors and microcontrollers that provide power management features. For example, the Freescale i.MX28 applications processor includes Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling, Clock Gating, Standby and Deep-sleep and a Power Management Unit which incorporates multiple Linear Regulators.
The importance of power management in today’s embedded designs is growing as embedded devices perform more complex tasks with limits placed on power consumption. The Nucleus Power Management Framework with hibernate capability now allows software engineers to design power-aware applications that can change the system’s operating point to standby or hibernate mode during periods of inactivity, thereby reducing power consumption to reduce heat dissipation, meet energy requirements and extend battery life. The high-level application programming interfaces (APIs) within the Nucleus Power Management Framework provide access to the processor’s power management features, such as DVFS and clock gating, with only a few lines of code to allow software developers to create power-optimized products.
“Optimizing power efficiency without sacrificing performance and functionality is critical for embedded system developers,” said Glenn Perry, general manager of Mentor Graphics Embedded Software Division. “The hibernate capability of the Nucleus Power Management Framework provides simplified access to power management functionality that would otherwise be left to the developer to write from scratch.”
