May 24, 2012 - Alex Moiceanu, the third place winner of the ZW3D CAD Model Challenge on GrabCAD.com agreed to talk to us about his experience with ZW3D CAD CAM Software. Alex is currently working as a design engineer at FSAE (Formula Student Automotive Edition) where he designs transmissions and brake systems as well as does other design work. Aside from his work at FSAE, Alex also works as a CAD freelancer in Romania.
Thank you for agreeing to an interview. Alex, is this the first time you used ZW3D? If so, was it difficult to learn?
Yes, it was my first time using ZW3D. I heard about ZW3D CAD CAM software some time ago and I planned to try it and this challenge was a great opportunity to do so. I have had experience with a lot of other CAD software and ZW3D was really easy to learn compared to other similar software. It is easy to learn for a beginner, I’ll give it a plus for that!

Where did you get your idea for your winning work?
One year ago, I saw a rifle, like the one I designed on the internet and I planned to design it in other software. But soon as I started, I noticed that it was very difficult to do this design because that software didn’t have the features that ZW3D was capable of. So I abandoned the project until I found software capable of doing what I needed. And this 3D CAD software was ZW3D.
What ZW3D features did you use to create your design?
Mostly I used reference planes because I designed holes and extruded shapes at different angles. Other than this, I used extrude and cut extrude for my designs.
How long did you spend on your design?
For my model, it took about three weeks because I wanted to do a complete rifle design that involved creating many parts. Help came from the very easy to use ZW3D features.
Which specific features do you like the most in ZW3D?
I like the ZW3D Manager the most, and how it interacts with the user. I also like the command tree and the filtering option, the Layer States Manager tab because it’s easy to access the layers, and the Visual Styles Manager.
In other words, ZW3D is a user friendly CAD software and I appreciate that ZWSOFT helps users and makes it easy to access the commands.
Congratulations again Alex, we can’t wait to see other things you create with ZW3D in the future!
