February 28, 2012 -- Applied Geographics (AppGeo) is working with Spatial Focus and the University of the Virgin Islands, Eastern Caribbean Center (UVI-ECC) to assist the Office of the Lieutenant Governor in evaluating the territory’s existing street addressing environment and to develop a plan for standardizing and deploying a territory-wide addressing system.
Current addressing in the territory is incomplete and a standard house numbering system is absent. In addition, a large proportion of the territory’s roads are unnamed which leads to challenges with GPS-based navigations systems and the territory’s 911 system. To kick-off the effort, AppGeo, Spatial Focus and UVI conducted a territory-wide workshop for public and private sector agencies that utilize address information. The workshop was convened by the Lt. Governor.
This project represents the initial implementation of one of the data development goals from the 2010 US Virgin Islands Geospatial Strategic Plan, which was developed by AppGeo in 2010.
“It is rewarding to see the GIS strategic planning process leading to important programmatic initiatives such as this one,” said Michael Terner, Executive Vice President, AppGeo, who led the strategic planning effort and presented at the recent addressing workshop. “The territory has recognized that it is time to modernize the addressing system to realize a variety of benefits for the territorial government, businesses and visitors.”
