eSpatial Customer Brings Online Mapping Solution to Constituents, Increasing Accessibility of Local Information
29 November 2011 -- Croydon Council, one of the largest boroughs in London, has leveraged eSpatial OnDemand GIS™ to develop a new online map to help its constituents to find information about the area in which they live.
The application, "About Your Area" (AYA), enables constituents and interested parties to view an interactive map of the local area, and to select and view the locations of services and amenities, such as local schools, bus stops, recycling centres and libraries.
Launched in August of this year, AYA is available at: http://www.croydon.gov.uk/aya
AYA also allows users to set a home address, and perform searches for places and services located nearest to their home. Once a home address is set, the application can also produce a brief summary for the location, listing the local councillor, local MP, council tax band, rubbish and recycling collections, as well as the nearest school, library and park.
More than 600 individual amenities are already in the system, with more to come. The 27 services currently listed are grouped into 5 themes:
- Civic & Amenities
- Health and Emergencies
- Education
- Leisure and Transport
“Our aim is to deliver an outstanding online experience to our residents," says Croydon's E-Communications Manager, Daniel Sweeting. "A key part of this is location-based information – allowing people to find the services nearest or relevant to them. About Your Area provides a scalable solution that delivers this information."
With geospatial data and analysis forming an important part of its remit, Croydon Council already uses eSpatial OnDemand GIS as an internal mapping tool. Deciding to leverage the same platform and information to keep their constituents informed has enabled the council to achieve a key organisational objective in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
"We are delighted to continue to add value to Croydon Council's use of our GIS software through the development and delivery of the "About Your Area" mapping service," says eSpatial CTO Eamon Walsh.
"We applaud Croydon Council's commitment to making information available to their constituents. It has been exciting to be involved in a project that delivers such value for the general public."
