As a rule, these development platforms are based on powerful embedded processors and operating systems that ensure real-time behavior, fast booting and reliable, autonomous operation in the field. Extensive options for connecting serial communication buses and I/O channels are also usually available. These systems are particularly employed in the automotive industry, which uses them to develop and test the functions of electronic control units in actual vehicles.
