Virginia Commonwealth University Implements Intergraph® Computer-Aided Dispatch System

New CAD system enables low-cost way to increase communication with City of Richmond

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., June 18, 2013 — (PRNewswire) — Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) recently completed a successful implementation of its dispatch center virtually connected to the existing Richmond, Virginia, communications center. VCU selected Intergraph®'s computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system to increase the accuracy of communication between VCU and the City of Richmond to leverage Richmond's existing CAD system in order to provide them with a cost effective dispatch solution.

By implementing Intergraph's system, VCU and Richmond are able to have one central public safety solution that gives officers and emergency responders immediate access to a single database that houses critical information for both agencies. Sharing data between the two agencies not only increases communication, but also improves officer safety through timely communication from surrounding agencies.

"Because Virginia Commonwealth University  is located in downtown Richmond, implementing a system that connects with Richmond's CAD system not only allows VCU to take advantage of the established public safety systems in Richmond, but also facilitates better communication between two agencies that often work closely together," said Virginia Commonwealth University Police Chief John Venuti.

Occupying more than 140 acres across two campuses in downtown Richmond, VCU is the premier urban, public research university in Virginia with more than 31,000 students and 13,000 faculty and staff members. The VCU Police Department is staffed by 92 sworn officers, while the dispatch center handles more than 90,000 service calls per year. Connecting to the Richmond CAD system enables improved efficiency of training personnel for both VCU and Richmond.

"The City of Richmond is delighted that the VCU Police selected the City's Intergraph CAD system to support its Emergency Communications operation," said Bill Hobgood, Project Manager for the City of Richmond IT Public Safety team. "VCU and Richmond public safety agencies interact frequently on a daily basis and it makes sense to share the same CAD system for collaboration and coordination purposes when joint resources are required for call-for-service events."

As part of the CAD system, VCU also implemented Intergraph's Mobile for Public Safety, I/NetViewer and I/NetDispatcher software for web-based communications between dispatchers and officers in the field.
