New Mapping Initiative Set to Launch in Capital

28 March 2011:  The London Mapping Festival 2011 – 2012, or LMF for short, is an exciting and unique initiative being launched in June 2011 and will run through to December 2012. It sets out to promote greater awareness and understanding of how maps and digital geographic data are being created and used within the Capital.

Through a diverse range of activities LMF will engage with a wide audience of mapping enthusiasts whether they are professionals, enthusiasts or those who are merely interested in mapping and related disciplines including; surveying, remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems and GPS.

The festival draws together a whole range of existing events that are currently run by learned societies, professional bodies and commercial companies in and around London and will carry the LMF brand for the 18-month festival duration. Examples of activities, some of which are free to attend, include; workshops for schools, outdoor events such as geocaching and picnics, public lectures, professional conferences and mass participation activities.

Details of each activity will be added to the website at www.londonmappingfestival.org as they are confirmed.

Fiona Cocks, LMF’s Lead Coordinator, comments, “We are incredibly excited about the launch of the London Mapping Festival. It aims to demonstrate the vast extent to which mapping underpins our daily lives and encourages people of all backgrounds to find out more about mapping, engage with industry professionals, explore the latest technologies and develop new skills”.

The list of supporters can be found online and include : Leica Geosystems, Google Maps, Promap, Society of Cartographers, London Map Fairs, Institution of Civil Engineers and Surveyors to name a few.

Fiona concludes, “We want everyone to have heard about the festival. This unique collaboration of mapping based events promises to be exciting, innovative and just lots of fun! Keep up to date through our daily Twitter campaign #lmfest or simply sign up to the e-newsletter via the website.”
