Sonics Expands Market for SNAP – Accessible to Larger Design Base

MILPITAS, Calif. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — April 6, 2010Sonics, Inc. ®, a premier supplier of intelligent on-chip communications solutions, today announced a Windows version of SNAP™ (Sonics Network for AMBA® Protocol) — making the product accessible to a greater number of SoC designers and developers. Users can now choose between a Windows or Linux version of SNAP that can be easily downloaded from the Sonics Web site at www.sonicsinc.com/SNAP.htm

SNAP is a free-to-evaluate, SoC design environment that provides tools and IP for capturing and analyzing bus designs. As a turnkey platform, SNAP simplifies the evaluation process of integrating IP and helps developers optimize their on-chip network designs. Additionally, SNAP eliminates the need for complicated licenses typical in conventional IP evaluations. Once a developer has captured a design and is satisfied with the final RTL, a commercial license can be obtained from Sonics to complete the design process.

“With the growing complexity of on-chip connectivity, it is critical that engineers have the tools necessary to streamline the design and evaluation process,” said Frank Ferro, director of marketing at Sonics. “By providing a Windows-based tool, Sonics is offering the design community an easy-to-use environment that is accessible to both engineers and managers, thus dramatically accelerating the IP evaluation process.”

Key applications for SNAP include embedded wireless (3G/4G baseband and WiMAX baseband), home networking (gateways and wireless routers), and automotive applications (automotive control and telematics).

SNAP helps lower development costs by reducing engineering resources needed for multi-layer designs. All arbitration, clocks, data width and protocol conversions are done automatically. SNAP includes support for AHB and APB protocols along with optional upgrades for AXI and OCP. It enables easy re-use and preserves legacy IP. The investment made in earlier generation cores is fully maintained as system upgrades become necessary.
