22nd international conference on VLSI design and 8th international conference on embedded systems inaugurated

LSI Corporation's Global CEO calls for increased focus on India driven innovation that impacts the whole of India

New Delhi, — January 05, 2009 — The 22nd international conference on Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) design and the 8th international conference on embedded systems was inaugurated today with a galaxy of industry stalwarts in attendance. The high profile international conference, the largest such event across the Southeast Asian region attracts not just the executives from across the industry but leading figures from the world of academia as well.

In his keynote, Abhi Talwalkar, President & CEO of multi-billion dollar LSI Corporation, said, "The development of the semiconductor industry in India needs to be viewed from the strategic value it can add. There are multiple opportunities for innovation that abound for the semiconductor industry to pick and contribute. To give one example, for mobile penetration to grow beyond current levels, there needs to be towers in the remotest of areas of India. Which could be made possible through advances in solar photovoltaic. There are many such opportunities across sectors like healthcare and energy among others that the semiconductor can contribute and am sure we will see that happening in the medium future."

According to Rajiv Kapur, Managing Director, Broadcom India and Special Sessions Chair, VLSI 2009," The industry is unanimous in the view that there is a big opportunity and the time has come for India driven and oriented innovation. That is why for the first time we have introduced a special session called "Made for India" forum which will showcase innovation targeted at the Indian market in the semiconductor space. There will also be deliberations on the road ahead, potential areas of focus etc. All of which will surely catalyze some significant initiatives in this direction in the days and months ahead."

A three-day technical program starting 5th January will feature keynote and plenary talks by industry leaders, technical paper presentations that reflect the state-of-the-art in VLSI design and embedded systems. It will be followed by a two day tutorial, design contest and EDA software contest.

Sponsored by the VLSI Society of India (VSI) and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) among others, the VLSI conference is a forum for researchers and designers to present and discuss various aspects of VLSI design, electronic design automation (EDA), enabling technologies, and embedded systems. Eminent personalities of VLSI, EDA and Embedded world like Abhi Talwalkar (President and CEO, LSI), Thomas W Williams (Fellow, Synopsys), Ajoy K Bose (CEO, Atrenta) and Prof Jacob Abraham (Texas University) will present the keynotes and special invited talks. Leading Electronic Design Automation (EDA) and IC design companies will display their products at the technical exhibition and industry forum to be held between Jan 5-7. Also, there will be a dedicated one day event, on Jan 7th to provide student community opportunity to learn more about VLSI and interact with the industry. The conference covers the entire gamut of activities under the two arms of the semiconductor industry - VLSI, and embedded systems.

About VLSI Conference and VSI

The VLSI Society of India was formed in 1989 with the noble goal of making India a strong force in VLSI. Activities in the VLSI area in India were limited at that time, and the number of professionals working in the VLSI area were also fewer. Now, over a hundred companies are working in India in the areas of chip design, embedded system design, electronic design automation, and design services. The VLSI Design Conference, which has been sponsored by the VLSI Society of India, has grown significantly in the past 15 years, with the number of participants reaching 800. The VLSI Design and Test Workshops, another event sponsored by the VLSI Society of India, has also grown since its inception in 1998 and now attracts over 300 participants.
