SMSC Announces Support of New USB 3.0 Specification

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—January 5, 2009— SMSC (Nasdaq: SMSC), a leading semiconductor company providing innovative system solutions spanning analog, digital and mixed-signal technologies, today announced support of the new USB 3.0, or SuperSpeed USB, specification and the company’s intent to develop next generation products that will enable adoption of the specification in new electronic systems.

“SMSC has a long history of supporting USB standards in its USB hub controllers, Flash media card readers and USB transceivers,” said Christine King, President & Chief Executive Officer of SMSC. “With over 150 million SMSC USB devices sold to date, it’s important to note that we have been a key contributor to the successful deployment of high-performance USB connectivity. As we incorporate performance and power enhancements that USB 3.0 enables, electronics manufacturers can count on SMSC to create highly integrated components delivering on the promise of USB 3.0.”

As high-definition digital content becomes more common, the need for a high-performance “sync-and-go” technology becomes ever more important in storage, video and multimedia electronics applications. SuperSpeed USB targets data transfer rates up to 10 times faster than Hi-Speed USB 2.0 which will greatly improve the end user experience while transferring large files between applications. With a focus on performance, programmability and integration, SMSC plans to build upon its leadership position in USB to deliver SuperSpeed USB 3.0 solutions that break this pending USB 2.0 bandwidth bottleneck in target applications that include digital TVs, printers, monitors, PCs, gaming consoles, digital still and video cameras, smart phones and other embedded and consumer applications.

“The approval and availability of the USB 3.0 specification is a first step to future adoption of this technology in consumer electronics,” said Brian O’Rourke, Principal Analyst, Multimedia Group, In-Stat. “To reach full market penetration in the coming years, it is important for suppliers to implement development programs now.”

USB technology was first implemented in 1998; since that time, billions of USB-enable devices have been sold.
