Broadcom's Media PC Technology Enhances the Multimedia Performance of UMPCs and MIDs

Low Power and High Performance Media PC Solutions Enable the Seamless Playback of High Quality Video and Audio Content for the Emerging UMPC, MID and Embedded x86 Appliance Market

TAIPEI, Taiwan, June 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Computex 2008 -- Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that its media PC technology enables seamless video and audio playback of high quality video for the emerging ultra-mobile personal computer (UMPC), mobile Internet device (MID) and x86 embedded appliance markets. As multimedia content on the Internet becomes higher quality and more compressed, the Broadcom(R) BCM70012 and BCM70010 media PC solutions provide high performance multimedia decoding, at low power, enabling PC OEMs to integrate seamless playback of high quality (and more compressed) video in a small, low cost form factor.

With a small form factor and low cost, UMPCs and MIDs are attractive to highly mobile consumers who enjoy digital media and desire the freedom and flexibility to communicate with others, and access information anytime, anywhere. These devices typically feature Internet connectivity, e-mail and office applications and tools, but lack the high quality multimedia capabilities that are now common on mobile PCs.

Broadcom's advanced media PC solutions satisfy the low cost, low power and high performance requirements of this market. Broadcom's BCM70012 (for PCI Express(R) applications) and BCM70010 (for PCI applications) act as multimedia hubs, providing advanced Internet multimedia capabilities and file playback in small UMPC or MID form factors, while delivering extended battery life, low power and a rich multimedia experience to this new class of low cost media PC devices.

"Broadcom has a long history of delivering a rich multimedia experience to consumers across various media," said Allen Light, Director of Marketing, Media PC Products in Broadcom's Broadband Communications Group. "With our latest media PC enhancements, PC OEMs have the ability to turn UMPCs and MIDs into multimedia hubs, addressing consumers' needs to access high quality multimedia content on-the-go, in a low cost, low power consumer device."

UMPCs and MIDs address the need for portability and are ideally positioned to allow users to view the growing amount of multimedia content available via the Internet. This amount of downloadable content is on the rise and encompasses both user-generated content (UGC) and user-generated video (UGV), as well as premium online content that includes network TV shows. According to In-Stat market research, the worldwide UMPC market is expected to grow to 7.3 million units by 2012 and the worldwide MID market growth is expected to grow to 11.4 million units by 2012.

"With the proliferation of online multimedia content now available to consumers, a need exists to adequately handle the capacity to play high quality video on consumer devices," said Michael Inouye, Industry Analyst, In-Stat. "Broadcom's technology will allow manufacturers to incorporate the ability to playback high quality multimedia content into a wide range of portable, low cost consumer devices."

MPC Product Information

The BCM70012 and BCM70010 are Broadcom's media PC solutions for enabling the flawless playback of high definition (HD) or highly compressed standard definition (SD) video content across a wide range of PCs in the industry. The media PC solutions lower CPU utilization and integrate seamlessly into Windows Vista(R), Windows XP(R), and Linux(R) environments, enabling mainstream PCs (with integrated graphics) to playback high definition content from a Blu-ray Disc(R), as well as from highly compressed HD or SD downloaded or broadcasted content. The Broadcom media PC solutions are available in three add-in card formats (including desktop PCI Express, PCI Express mini-card or ExpressCard(R) 34), and as a chipset solution for PC motherboard applications.

Leveraging Broadcom's widely deployed and field proven technologies in the high definition set-top box and consumer Blu-ray player markets, Broadcom's media PC technology provides the highest quality video playback of multi-format (VC-1, H.264 and MPEG-2) HD or SD content for the mainstream PC market. With total power consumption of approximately 1.5 watt, Broadcom's media PC solutions help extend battery life on UMPCs, MIDs and notebook PCs.

Green by Design

Broadcom and its foundry partners are leveraging today's most advanced lithographic node for manufacturing semiconductors. By designing solutions in 65nm process technology, Broadcom is able to provide significant environmental benefits over competitive solutions in 90nm and 130nm processes by enabling lower power consumption, smaller size and higher yields while providing higher levels of integration that result in fewer components. Additionally, Broadcom supports the current industry initiatives to remove lead (Pb) and other hazardous materials, such as halogens like bromide and chlorine, from all products. With the depth and breadth of Broadcom's advanced portfolio of market-proven IP, the company is able to drive innovative new products to market while reducing the impact on human health and the environment.

Availability and Pricing
