Vitesse Stackable Ethernet Switch and PHY ICs Selected by Napera Networks

CAMARILLO, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—June 2, 2008— Dedicated to making network security affordable and easy for small-to-medium sized enterprises (SME), Napera Networks, Inc., a leader in building secure and healthy networks, has selected Vitesse Semiconductor Corporations (Pink Sheets: VTSS) E-StaX-34 Enterprise Ethernet Switch and Gigabit Copper PHYs for use in its new N24 Controller and N24S Expansion Appliances. Napera uses single-point stacking management technology and advanced security features only found in the Vitesse E-StaX IC product family as part of an innovative managed stacking architecture that allows its customers to add new Expansion Appliances to their networks without interruption of services in the stack.

Naperas solutions are designed to automatically enforce health and identity on the network, while eliminating the need to manage complex enterprise deployments that require the installation of third-party agents, new servers, and network reconfiguration, said Chris Boscolo, CTO at Napera. Vitesses commitment to innovation and a flexible architecture, including reference systems and strong application support, further advances our ability to deliver solutions that are easy to deploy and manage, which is critical for our customer base.

The Vitesse E-StaX-34 IC product family includes single-point stacking management technology and advanced security features, all from a single software interface. Vitesses Enterprise Ethernet Switch has hardware controlled stack wide learning and continuous automatic MAC table synchronization, which significantly reduces CPU loading. This architecture provides configuration times for a switch stack that are eight to one hundred times faster than with the traditional clustering architecture provided by competitive IC devices. This equates to configuration changes that occur almost instantaneously at less than 100 msec, thereby, ensuring continuous Ethernet functionality after changes in the stack.

Network protection and security is accessed through the V-CAP content-aware packet processor on all inbound and outbound wire-speed packets. The V-CAP is a Ternary Content-Addressable Memory (T-CAM) based frame processor enabling implementation of a rich set of security features, including the ability to do frame filtering, rate limitation, snooping, redirection, mirroring and accounting functions.

E-StaX switches also allow for scalability in the SME network. Offering 24-ports of Ethernet (10/10/1000 Mbps) with one management port and 1x5 or 2x5 Gbps stacking ports, each can support up to 100 devices. Or, with Naperas solution, eight appliances can be stacked together for a total capacity of 192 ports and up to 800 devices.

The E-StaX Switch IC works in conjunction with three Vitesse octal, Copper PHYs. These devices are based on a patented, fully balanced, voltage-mode line driver technology, allowing for lower cost magnetics to be used in Gigabit Ethernet applications. They also contain two embedded, energy-efficient features that deliver green savings equivalent to over 400mW per port. The first, ActiPHY, enables an automatic power savings mode that can detect unused Ethernet ports on network devices and power them down or place them in stand-by mode. The second, PerfectReach, an intelligent algorithm, actively adjusts the power level needed based on cable length, saves energy for links shorter than the full 100 meters of cable length specified by IEEE standards. Additional information about these features are available on Vitesses EcoEthernet web site: www.vitesse.com/green.

As a leader in Enterprise Ethernet switching IC products, Vitesse is focused on delivering innovative, eco-friendly Gigabit Ethernet solutions to enable next-generation network equipment, said Martin Olsen, product marketing manager for Vitesse. Naperas new network controller appliances are an example of how Napera leveraged the E-StaX intelligent switching solution and octal PHY energy-efficiency features into network appliances that expertly address network security and stability for small-to-medium sized enterprises.
