Magma's QuickCap NX selected by IBM as Golden Extraction Standard

SANTA CLARA, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—February 27, 2007— Magma(R) Design Automation Inc. (Nasdaq: LAVA), a provider of semiconductor design software, today announced that IBM(R) (Nasdaq: IBM) has expanded use of Magma's QuickCap(R) NX parasitic capacitance extraction software as its golden 3-D extraction reference standard for advanced process technologies. IBM is also using Magma's QuickInd(TM) as the standard for comparing inductance extraction of IBM layout parasitic extraction (LPE) decks.

QuickCap NX will be used by IBM's extraction research and development team to correlate full-chip parasitic extraction data to 3-D extraction data across all IBM technologies including CMOS, SiGe and SOI, and across all design types, including digital, analog and mixed-signal. This includes both simple metal configurations and more complex transistor-level structures. IBM chose QuickCap NX for its ability to accurately model and predict silicon performance.

"We chose QuickCap NX as our golden 3-D extraction reference because it provides fast, accurate parasitic capacitance extraction," said Matt Graf, IBM manager of PDK Development. "With its ability and versatility to enable more accurate prediction of sub-nanometer geometry silicon performance, QuickCap NX is important to our development efforts."

"IBM's decision to use QuickCap NX is especially gratifying because it shows the value and confidence placed by a technology giant in the tool's effectiveness for its advanced processes," said Kam Kittrell, general manager of Magma's Design Implementation Business Unit. "This decision solidifies QuickCap NX as the clear leader in parasitic capacitance extraction for advanced sub-nanometer technologies."

About QuickCap NX

QuickCap NX is used by major semiconductor companies as the reference standard for parasitic extraction. It is a highly accurate 3D extractor that precisely models advanced process effects such as optical proximity correction (OPC), chemical-metal polishing (CMP) and trapezoidal wires. QuickCap NX is proven to closely correlate to exact analytical solutions and silicon measurements, delivering capacitance values that are within 1 percent of silicon measurements.

It is the only extractor that provides dial-in accuracy and error-bounds reporting on each net, giving the user complete control and trust in the accuracy of results. Leading foundries have validated QuickCap NX's ability to more closely match silicon measurements. By taking process effects into account, the average difference between QuickCap NX capacitance values and actual silicon measurements has been reduced from 9.79 percent to just 0.11 percent.

QuickCap NX in the Magma Flow

QuickCap NX can be used for post-layout analysis in the Magma flow. QuickCap technology is also incorporated into the Blast Fusion(R) and Talus(TM) physical design software systems to support highly accurate timing and noise analysis during chip implementation. It is used to compute the highly accurate capacitance rules used within Blast Fusion, Talus and the Quartz(TM) RC sign-off extraction tool.

About QuickInd

QuickInd provides highly accurate total and mutual inductance extraction. Utilizing a Monte Carlo solution of the exact governing equations, it is fast, accurate, robust and memory efficient, and can calculate complex inductance structures at all technology nodes, including 90-nm and below. QuickInd calculates inductor values and metrics to determine the importance of each inductor, resulting in compact netlists for efficient circuit simulation.
