As director of Next Generation Web at IBM's T. J. Watson Research Center in Hawthorne, New York, Dr. Yoffa leads research activities in advanced technologies for pervasive, client, and web software infrastructure, including sensors and actuators, distributed messaging, and web service architectures. Her responsibilities also comprise technologies for Accessibility and Healthcare. Prior to her current position, Dr. Yoffa was director of Emerging System Technologies at IBM, leading research activities in computer system hardware and software ranging from handheld devices to large scale-out systems. She has also held numerous technical and management positions in design automation in IBM's research and development organizations.
Dr. Yoffa is 2006 President of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, the first society to endorse the recently formed IEEE Council on Electronic Design Automation (CEDA). She is a member of the external advisory boards of the University of Southern California Electrical Engineering Department and the University of Massachusetts Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. She has also served on the editorial advisory board of IEEE Spectrum magazine. Dr. Yoffa received a Bachelor of Science and a Ph.D. in Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where her area of study was theoretical solid state physics. She is a Fellow of the IEEE and a member of ACM, Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi.
"Ellen's technical contributions, coupled with her professional activities and her advocacy for the recognition of the design automation profession in the greater technical and business community, make her most deserving of this award," said William Joyner of IBM and SRC, and the 2005 DAC general chair.

"EDA combines the opportunity to explore exciting, groundbreaking technologies with the chance to work with many wonderful colleagues. I've had a great career in EDA and I'm happy that this award brings attention to the women in this industry, both experienced professionals and those just entering the field."

The 10th Workshop for Women in Design Automation (WWINDA) will be held at DAC on Monday, July 24, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. This year's topic will be "Working the 80/20 Rule for Success - Focusing in on What Matters," and will feature a keynote speaker and panelists discussing how talented women "cracked the code" of focusing on the work that matters in order to also sustain a successful work/life balance.
