Mindspeed(R) Introduces New Broadcast Video Products In Low-Power MLF/QFN Packaging; New Media Interface Products Reduce Power Consumption by 50 Percent Compared to Competing Solutions

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—April 25, 2006— Mindspeed Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: MSPD), a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions for network infrastructure applications, today extended its broadcast video product suite with a new family of high-definition/standard definition (HD/SD) physical media-interface devices in lower-power micro lead frame/quad flat no-lead (MLF/QFN) packaging for broadcast video serial transport applications. The new MLF/QFN package devices offer a robust, reliable solution with an overall power reduction of approximately 50 percent compared to competing solutions in the market today.

Mindspeed's new HD/SD family also decreases package footprint size by 50 percent or more while providing a cost-effective migration to the high-definition market from existing standard definition infrastructure equipment. It offers broadcast video equipment customers greater choice and flexibility in designing systems such as routing switchers, distribution amplifiers, and large production switchers as well as other broadcast video equipment.

The new products join Mindspeed's existing family of drop-in compatible HD/SD devices as well as new standard definition (SD)-only devices also announced today (see accompanying press release).

Mindspeed's new broadcast-video media-interface products include the M21234 single-channel video cable equalizer, the M21235 single-channel video reclocker and the M21232 single-channel video cable driver, each supporting SD/HD applications at 143Mbps to 1.5Gbps data rates. The products offer the same power savings and performance improvements as Mindspeed's legacy pin-for-pin compatible offering but in smaller MLF/QFN packages.

"With today's announcements, we offer a switching, equalizing, driving and reclocking solution set for HD/SD and SD applications in a drop-in compatible footprint or MLF/QFN package," said Tom Kapucija, director of marketing for Mindspeed. "This new package platform will also allow us to add feature enhancements for next generation 3G applications."

Technical Details

Mindspeed's physical media-interface products deliver improved system-level flexibility and design margins along with a wider operating range (-10 degrees C to +85 degrees C) and improved price/performance ratio. Industry-low power dissipation simplifies thermal management while extending product life and reducing system costs. The products are RoHS compliant and backwards compatible with existing reflow processes.

M21234 HD/SD Single-Channel Video Cable Equalizer: The M21234 increases the maximum transmission distance of serial digital interface (SDI) and digital video broadcast-asynchronous serial interface (DVB-ASI) video signals across commonly used bandwidth-limiting 75 ohm co-axial cable. Additionally, it reduces power dissipation by 25 percent to 50 percent using flexible power supply voltage options in a more compact package than existing drop-in compatible devices.

M21235 HD/SD Single-Channel Video Reclocker: The M21235 is the industry's lowest-power clock-and-data-recovery (CDR) reclocker solution, and is designed to remove both random and inter-symbol interference (ISI) jitter from the retimed data and provide a retimed data stream compliant to Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) and DVB-ASI serial video digital data input. Advanced features such as a selectable reduced output swing mode help to reduce power dissipation to as little as one-quarter to one-third that of what previously was the only alternative solution, depending on power supply voltage. Additionally, selectable auto rate detect sequences speed signal acquisition. Packaged in a 7x7mm MLF for compact designs, control and setup is provided via dedicated hardware pins or through an I(2)C compatible serial interface.

M21232 HD/SD Single-Channel Video Cable Driver: The M21232 surpasses industry-standard device Output Return Loss (ORL) specifications to provide system developers with added design and manufacturing margins. It is a high-speed, low-power, low-jitter cable driver designed to drive HD/SD serial digital video data through 75 ohm coaxial cable typically used in SMPTE and DVB-ASI video applications. It reduces power dissipation by 30 percent to 55 percent using flexible power supply options and cuts output jitter while improving IRL and rise/fall times.

Pricing and Availability

Production samples are available now with volumes ramping this quarter. In OEM quantities the M21232 single-channel HD/SD video cable driver is $9.00, the M21234 single-channel HD/SD video cable equalizer is $26.00, and the M21235 single-channel HD/SD video reclocker is $25.00.
