National Semiconductor Introduces Industry's Fastest Family of Analog Crosspoint Switches

LMH6582 and LMH6583 Achieve -3 dB Bandwidth of 500 MHz, Highest Bandwidth in the Industry, for High-Resolution Video Applications

NAB, LAS VEGAS, April 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE: NSM) today expanded its LMH(R) high-speed amplifier portfolio with two 16 x 8 analog crosspoint switches, the industry's fastest switches for high-resolution professional, broadcast and industrial video applications.

The LMH6582 and LMH6583 are fully buffered, non-blocking analog crosspoint switches designed on National's proprietary VIP10 process. By offering the industry's highest bandwidth and lowest crosstalk performance, these devices can give systems a 25 percent to 50 percent boost in bandwidth compared to competitive products. This allows video designers to extend video resolution to QXGA (2048 x 1536) and beyond.

Increased Video Resolution, Picture Clarity

The LMH6582 and LMH6583 come in fixed gain of 1 and gain of 2, respectively. Both versions provide a -3 dB bandwidth of 500 MHz and 0.1 dB gain flatness out to 100 MHz. Slew rates up to 3000 V/us ensure that bandwidth is maintained over a wide range of signal amplitudes. Designers can increase picture resolution in various wideband video applications, including wideband routers, matrix switchers, security/surveillance systems and video distribution. In addition, the low channel-to-channel crosstalk of -50 dBc at 100 MHz increases picture clarity by minimizing video artifacts and shadows from adjacent channels. Each buffered output can drive up to two back- terminated, 75-Ohm video loads.

Flexibility and Unique Architecture

The inputs and outputs of the LMH6582 and LMH6583 feature high-impedance inactive states, making expansion to larger arrays easy. Symmetry has been designed into the pin arrangement, allowing doubling of inputs or outputs without the performance degradation normally associated with multi-chip expansion. As an example, two LMH6582 chips can be combined on opposite sides of a PC board to form either a 16 x 16 or 32 x 8 matrix. Similarly, the digital control, implemented by a 4-pin serial interface, is designed for ease of use and maximum flexibility. For instance, users have the option of configuring the outputs individually, or all at the same time without powering down or resetting the entire chip.

VIP10 Process

National's LMH6582 and LMH6583 are National's newest amplifiers using the VIP10 process. Developed in National's wafer fabrication site in Arlington, Texas, the VIP10 process is a high-speed, dielectrically isolated, complementary bipolar process that utilizes deep trench technology on a bonded wafer for complete dielectric isolation and optimal high-speed amplifier performance. The VIP10 process technology allows National to design the most power-efficient, performance-oriented high-speed amplifiers on the market today.
