TI Unveils Cost-Optimized TPS40K(TM) DC/DC Controllers

Simple-to-Use DC/DC Buck Controllers Support Lower, Higher and Wider Input Voltage Ranges for Modular and On-the-Board Power Systems

DALLAS, March 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (NYSE: TXN) (TI) today announced four new TPS40K(TM) DC/DC buck controllers. The low pin-count, cost-optimized devices, used in modular and on-the-board power supplies, simplify power design in set-top boxes, disk drives, industrial control, servers and distributed power systems.

Wide-Input Voltage-Mode Controller

TI's TPS40200 non-synchronous PWM buck controller features an extremely wide input range of 4.5 V to 52 V with an output voltage that can be adjusted down to 0.7 V. The TPS40200 features voltage-mode control with voltage feed forward, which simplifies compensation design as input voltage varies over the entire input range. Packaged in a low-pin 8L SOIC, the device supports control and protection features needed in today's power supplies, such as under voltage lockout, programmable closed loop soft start and short circuit protection.

Power system designers can optimize the TPS40200 for efficiency or solution size by programming the switching frequency from 35 kHz to 500 kHz or the controller can be synchronized via an external clock. An integrated 200mA FET driver allows the direct drive of small- and medium-size Power FETs. See: http://www.ti.com/sc06059 .

Low-Vin Voltage-Mode Controller

The TPS40041 synchronous, voltage-mode PWM controller can operate from a 2.25 V to 5.5 V input source and generate output of 0.59 V at a fixed frequency of 600 kHz. Further reducing pin-count, the buck controller integrates several features, such as soft-start and short-circuit protection. The TPS40041 in a 3 mm x 3 mm 8L SON package allows designers to implement very small point-of-load power supplies without sacrificing performance. See: http://www.ti.com/sc06059b .

1.6 A, 1.25 MHz Controller in a Tiny 3 mm x 3 mm Package

TI's TPS40222, a 1.25 MHz non-synchronous device with integrated high side FET comes in a tiny 3 mm x 3 mm, 6 pin SON package and can operate from a 4.5 V to 8 V input source. Additionally, the controller's output voltage can be adjusted as low as 0.8 V. Its high frequency operation allows for the smallest power supply form factor. The TPS40222 implements current mode control and a pulse by pulse current limiting feature with frequency foldback to protect the output during fault conditions. See: http://www.ti.com/sc06059c .

Mid-Vin Voltage-Mode Controller

TI also introduced its new TPS40190 cost-optimized synchronous buck controller with voltage-mode control and adaptive gate drive that operates from a 4.5 V to 15 V input voltage range at a fixed 300 kHz switching frequency. The simple-to-design device integrates a linear regulator, which converts the input voltage to an on-chip 5 V source to power the controller and drivers. In addition, the TPS40190 can generate an adjustable output voltage as low as 0.6 V, making it ideally suited for cost-sensitive applications that convert from 5 V bus, intermediate bus or 12 V bus standards. The controller also features three levels of on-chip, over-current protection, internal soft start ramp and a dedicated enable pin. See: http://www.ti.com/sc06059d .
