AIA Commends Career of Architect of the Capitol Stephen T. Ayers, FAIA

WASHINGTONNov. 1, 2018 - The American Institute of Architects (AIA) EVP/Chief Executive Officer Robert Ivy, FAIA, is issuing the following statement today regarding the upcoming retirement of Architect of the Capitol Stephen T. Ayers, FAIA:

“Throughout his tenure as Architect of the Capitol, Stephen Ayers has successfully ensured the highest standards of design, construction and preservation for some of the most important buildings in American history while also overcoming significant challenges. He shepherded the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center project to completion; he oversaw the repair of the Washington Monument following significant damage during the 2011 earthquake; and he restored the U.S. Capitol Dome and Rotunda by repairing more than 1,000 cracks. He has proven how architects can lead and he serves as a symbol of the impact architects have on public projects. His work over the course of his 20 years in public service represents a virtual ‘blueprint for better’.”

Historically AIA has served a role in the process of advising on the Architect of the Capitol position. In years past, the Institute has submitted recommendations of highly qualified architects to the U.S. Congressional Commission—tasked with formally submitting candidates to the president for nomination—for their consideration. Additionally, AIA has testified before Congress on nominees. The Institute is currently convening a task force to lead a review of architects that could be recommended for the Architect of the Capitol position.
