TI Unveils Smaller, Advanced '78 Series' Wide-Input Plug-in Power Modules

WARRENVILLE, Ill., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Building upon the success of its popular PT78 non-isolated plug-in power modules, Texas Instruments Incorporated (NYSE: TXN) (TI) announced today three new wide- input, non-isolated modules that simplify power system design. Fifty percent smaller than their predecessors, the flexible PTN78000, PTN78060 and PTN78020 series of 1.5 A, 3 A and 5 A devices can be used in a wide variety of applications that require input voltages from 7 V to 36 V, including industrial, test and measurement instruments, distributed power, workstations and medical equipment. See: http://www.ti.com/sc04247 .

The third-generation '78 series' high-performance modules are lead (Pb)- free and RoHS compliant, and provide a precisely regulated output voltage, which is adjustable via an external resistor from 2.5 V to 12.6 V. Providing excellent line and load regulation, the modules deliver a full load power conversion efficiency of 85 percent with a 5 V output.

  Key Features of the PTN78000, PTN78060 and PTN78020:
   *  1.5 A, 3 A and 5 A Output Current Ratings
   *  Wide Input Voltage Range: 7 V to 36 V (or 10 x Vout)
   *  Wide-Range Adjustable Output: 2.5 V to 12.6 V
   *  On/Off Inhibit Control
   *  Short-Circuit and Over-Current Protection
   *  Over-Temperature Shutdown
   *  -40 degrees C to 85 degrees C Operating Range
   *  Remote Sense (PTN78020)

  Availability, Packaging and Pricing

PTN78000 integrated power modules are available in volume today from TI and its authorized distributors. Double-sided, open-frame construction and a small footprint make the modules suitable for high density designs. The PTN78000 comes in a small, 18.9 mm x 12.5 mm x 8.5 mm module, the PTN78060 in a 25.2 mm x 15.7 mm x 9 mm module, and the PTN78020 in a 37.9 mm x 22.1 mm x 9 mm module. Suggested pricing in quantities of 1,000 units each is $8 for the PTN78000, $11 for the PTN78060 and $15 for the PTN78020. All devices are available in through-hole or SMD pin configurations. SMD devices are available on tape and reel. Complete documentation and TI's fourth quarter 2004 Power Management Selection Guide are available through http://power.ti.com/ .
