Dewberry Selected for USGS National Assessment of Hydrography Data

Study findings expected to establish standards and benefits for an enhanced future program

Fairfax, VA—October 15, 2014 -- Dewberry, a privately held professional services firm, has been tasked by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to conduct a study to collect and refine user requirements and to identify associated benefits for an expanded national hydrography data program that meets federal, state and other business uses and needs.

The study is sponsored by the USGS National Geospatial Program (NGP), the USGS Office of Water Information (OWI), and the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS). The study’s findings are expected to establish a baseline understanding of national business uses, needs, and associated benefits for national hydrography data, and to inform the design of an enhanced future program that balances requirements, benefits, and costs.

This project includes three sub-tasks: development of a project plan, collection and aggregation of user requirements and associated benefits, and development of tools that USGS can use to analyze study results and evaluate program implementation scenarios.

Dewberry previously performed the National Enhanced Elevation Assessment for USGS using a similar cost-benefit analysis of elevation data requirements, benefits, and program implementation costs, which ultimately resulted in the 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) initiative whereby enhanced elevation data will be systematically collected for the U.S. through a USGS partnership program.
