The American Institute of Architects, California Council, Announces Pugh + Scarpa as the 2010 Firm Award Recipient

SACRAMENTO, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- Oct 22, 2009 -- The American Institute of Architects, California Council (AIACC), announces the 2010 Firm Award recipient, Pugh + Scarpa, located in Santa Monica. This award is the most significant honor awarded to a firm by The AIACC and recognizes firms who have consistently produced distinguished architecture, contributing to the advancement of the profession in areas of design, research, planning, technology, preservation and innovation for a period of at least 10 years.

Founded in 1991 by Gwynne Pugh, AIA, and Lawrence Scarpa, AIA, the firm has garnered international acclaim for its success in bringing together innovative aesthetics, with leadership in sustainability, as well as socially progressive design. The firm encourages a culture of ingenuity and exploration, which enables them to maintain a fresh approach to every project they undertake.

The firm office is located in Bergamot Station in Santa Monica, and was converted by the firm from a water-heater factory and cultural landmark, into 46 art galleries, shops, lofts and creative offices. Thus, creating a place where fusion between industrial and artistic motifs are easily seen, and the relationship between fine arts and architecture is evident.

The firm's design innovation is a direct product of its process, resulting in a carefully developed commitment to designing, without expectations or pre-conceived notions. The design team invites their clients and communities into this creative process, and welcomes the complexity generated by recognizing the multiplicity of aspirations.

The firm's philosophy, "that good design is for everyone, no matter what their income level," is delivered to non-profit, affordable housing developers, as well as the wealthiest of clients. An example being "Livable Places," a non-profit developing and policy organization for affordable and mixed-use urban dwelling, which was co-founded by the firm. The firm acknowledges the commitment of fostering better communities by extending beyond designing buildings.

Over the past 10 years, the firm has won multiple awards. In addition, the firm has presented seminars at numerous AIA and USGBC National Conventions, served as Design Award jurors, and the principals have taught at the university level for nearly three decades.

The AIACC acknowledges the many contributions and accomplishments of Pugh + Scarpa, and the profound leadership of Gwynne Pugh, AIA, Lawrence Scarpa, AIA, and Angela Brooks, AIA.

The AIACC represents the interests of more than 11,000 architects and allied professionals in California. Founded in 1944, The AIACC's mission supports architects in their endeavors to improve the quality of life for all Californians by creating more livable communities, sustainable designs and quality work environments. Today, The AIACC is the largest component of the national AIA organization. For more information, visit www.aiacc.org.
