Leadis Technology Expands Camera Flash Family With 400mA and 800mA LED Drivers in 2mm x 3mm TDFN Packages

SUNNYVALE, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- Jul 07, 2009 -- Leadis Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: LDIS), an analog and mixed-signal semiconductor developer of LED drivers, today announced sample availability of the LDS8680/81 and LDS8640/41, four new inductorless, dual-output LED flash/lamp drivers in low profile (0.8mm), space-saving 2x3mm TDFN packages. Targeted at camera-enabled handsets and digital still cameras, the LDS8680/81 and LDS8640/41 drive up to 800mA and 400mA, respectively, from a single Lithium-Ion battery.

The LDS8680/81 and LDS8640/41 offer multiple advantages for system designers. For longer battery life, the efficiency is increased up to 90% in torch mode by the inclusion of Leadis' proprietary PowerLite™ Current Regulator. Simple and flexible controls in these new drivers make the system design easier. LED currents can be factory pre-programmed from 52mA to 400mA per channel eliminating the need for any external components. The two output channels can be operated independently; for example, one as the primary camera flash and the other for red-eye reduction. The on-chip automatic flash time-out can be programmed to either 250 or 500ms. In addition it is possible to realize a complete camera flash solution using the LDS8680/81 (or LDS8640/41) with only three external capacitors and no external resistors, resulting in both reduced board space and lower bill of materials.

"Leadis is pleased to bring to the market these innovative LED drivers that can significantly reduce the board foot-print, customer bill of material and design time," said Skip Wong, Vice President of Sales at Leadis. "To further simplify time to market, the LDS8680 and LDS8640 are controlled by our proprietary SmartOneWire™ interface. This single-pin, intelligent interface allows both commands (for instance LED on/off, set LED current to 200mA) and continuous-mode PWM pulses to be issued to the LED driver. This gives system designers maximum flexibility as they can specify on the fly both the LED current level and its time duration."

The LDS8680/81 and LDS8640/41 feature extensive protection modes. These include over Temperature, Voltage and Current in addition to Soft Start and Current Limiting functions. Each of the dual channels can be independently controlled and/or individually turned on and off. Both Torch and Flash modes are supported.

About the LDS8681/41

The LDS8681/41 are charge-pump drivers designed to operate with a Li-Ion battery. These devices start operating in the 1-x mode, and utilize an on-chip soft-start sequence that minimizes in-rush currents. If or when the output voltage is insufficient to regulate all LED currents, the devices automatically switch to 2-x mode. The LED currents are driven with 8% absolute current accuracy and 8% channel-to-channel current matching. Current dimming in these devices is achieved by PWM control. Samples of the LDS8681/41 are available now.

About the LDS8680/40

The LDS8680/40 are parametrically identical to the LDS8681/41, respectively, except that they are controlled by Leadis' proprietary SmartOneWire™ interface. This intelligent, single-pin interface allows the LDS8680/40 to operate either in PWM or command mode. Samples for the LDS8680/40 will be available in the third quarter.
