City of Baltimore and Baltimore Gas and Electric Adopt Envista Infrastructure Coordination Technology

February 10, 2009 --Envista Corporation, the exclusive provider of web-based software for infrastructure project coordination, today announced Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) will join the City of Baltimore to coordinate infrastructure renewal projects using Envista's web-based technology. The city and utility will leverage Envista's map-driven solution to manage projects and share schedules to maximize their efforts and capital investments in construction and maintenance projects across the city. Envista's solution is also being piloted by Maryland counties in the BGE service area.

The City of Baltimore is implementing Envista in several city departments including transportation, water and wastewater to facilitate internal coordination of work as well as coordination with BGE. Baltimore has substantially improved their road network since 2006 through their Orange Cone initiative, and they will use Envista to protect newly constructed roads through better coordination with utilities.

BGE serves more than 1.2 million businesses and residential electric customers and over 633,860 gas customers. Their service area is a 2,300-square-mile area encompassing the City of Baltimore City and all or part of 10 Central Maryland counties. Envista's solution will help enable BGE to keep their maintenance programs ahead of the paving schedules. BGE can perform leak surveys prior to paving and make the necessary repairs. This example of efficient project coordination amongst the infrastructure community reduces disruption in communities and saves tax dollars.

Margaret Martin, Division Chief of Baltimore’s Department of Transportation, Engineering & Construction Division states, "Baltimore has 2,000 miles of roads, 450 miles of alleys, and many miles of other infrastructure above and below ground. Downtown Baltimore has had a flurry of roadwork in the past few years and we will use Envista during our design phase to broadcast schedules and scopes to affected utilities. Our successful Operation Orange Cone has been the catalyst for road improvement, and Baltimore intends to use Envista to protect newly constructed roads by controlling utilities’ restoration requirements should they need to cut into the new pavement.”

"This centralized way to share project information and easily identify coordination opportunities with the City and other infrastructure players gives us crucial information to support our business decisions," states Joseph Opert, Principal Engineer – Gas Distribution Planning. "We expect significant financial benefits from performing maintenance activities prior to planned road work, scheduling capital improvement projects to avoid road moratoriums, and more accurately estimating costs associated with new service requests.”
