Avnet, The MathWorks, TI, Xilinx Launch Co-Processing SpeedWay Workshop

PHOENIX—(BUSINESS WIRE)—October 31, 2008— Avnet Electronics Marketing, an operating group of Avnet, Inc. (NYSE: AVT), The MathWorks, Texas Instruments and Xilinx announce the launch of a 2-day Co-Processing SpeedWay Design Workshop. Creating FPGA-based Co-Processors for DSPs Using Model-Based Design features the Spartan-3A DSP FPGA / DaVinci Development Platform announced yesterday. The workshops are being offered in locations throughout North America, Europe and Asia beginning December 1, 2008.

Engineers from Avnet and The MathWorks will present the 2-day, hands-on workshop, which features Model-Based Design using MATLAB and Simulink from The MathWorks to accelerate real-time image processing. Participants will explore video motion estimation algorithms and determine optimal partitioning between a Texas Instruments DaVinci DSP and co-processing performed by the Spartan-3A DSP FPGA. The practical hands-on labs showcase automatic code generation for the DaVinci and Spartan-3A DSP FPGA, demonstrate co-processor memory mapping to the DSP, and implement hardware co-simulation over Ethernet.

Upon completion of the course, designers will have implemented a working example of a real-time image stabilization application running in the DaVinci DSP and Spartan-3A DSP FPGA. The increasing demand for high-performance digital signal processing has led designers to a combined DSP processor and FPGA co-processor architecture, said Jim Beneke, vice president of global technical marketing for Avnet Electronics Marketing. The new Co-Processing SpeedWay helps students leverage the benefits of high-level processor-based software design with the parallel DSP computation power of FPGAs.

The MathWorks is pleased to have the opportunity to collaborate with industry leaders such as Avnet, Texas Instruments, and Xilinx to address the need of DSP designers and system architects for a co-processing design methodology, said Amnon Gai, who manages The MathWorks partnerships with Avnet, TI, and Xilinx. Attendees of the Speedway will learn how Model-Based Design with MATLAB and Simulink provides an environment that unifies simulation, implementation, and verification of complex DSP and FPGA co-processing systems.

Offloading operations that require high-speed parallel processing onto the FPGA allows users to extend the set of built-in accelerators available on the DaVinci processor to accommodate more sophisticated video processing techniques, said Tom Hill, senior manager for DSP marketing at Xilinx. By taking the new Co-Processing SpeedWay Workshop, developers will learn a design methodology that lets them use FPGA co-processing to improve overall system performance without requiring knowledge of RTL design flows.

Texas Instruments is pleased to collaborate in the hands-on demonstration of state-of-the-art embedded processor solutions, said Thomas Brooks, worldwide channel development marketing manager for Texas Instruments. The winning combination of signal processing, development tools, third-party support and software is essential in accelerating time to market for our customers.

The 2-day Co-Processing SpeedWay Design Workshop is also sponsored by Blackhawk and features the Blackhawk USB510L JTAG Emulator for TI, DaVinci, and OMAP family DSPs. To register, please visit: http://www.em.avnet.com/xilinxspdwy-coprocess.
