LSI Logic Now Shipping Full Production 36-Port and 28-Port SAS Expanders With First Pass Silicon

Company's Expanders and SAS Controllers Proven Interoperable, Offering Customers Reduced Cost and Time to Market Advantage for Storage Configurations, Large and Small

MILPITAS, Calif., Jan. 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI) today announced that it is shipping production units of the LSI 3Gb/s Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) 36-port and 28-port expanders. As the only company in the industry offering both SAS expanders and controllers, LSI allows OEM customers to realize reduced test costs and faster time to market with solutions featuring interoperable expanders and controllers.

"LSI has achieved first pass success on this product, which is unique in the industry and is a testament to our expander expertise and SAS development process," said Robin Wagner, director of product marketing, Storage Components Group, LSI Logic. "Using LSI, OEMs have the opportunity to source expanders and controllers from a single vendor, providing proven interoperable solutions and the lowest risk path to success. By reducing the number of vendors to be managed, these OEMs can speed products to their customers faster."

With 36 or 28 independent SAS/Serial ATA (SATA) ports, the LSISASx36 and LSISASx28 expanders enable large external storage environments to connect to multiple initiator and target devices, reducing hardware costs and real estate requirements, while offering the scalability demanded by today's applications. The LSISASx36 and LSISASx28 expanders offer a common programming model for internal and external SEP support for ease of development and seamless customer migration. In addition, they provide an upgrade path from the LSISASx12 and LSISASx12A's external SEP interface.

Key product features include zoning for storage partitioning applications, and initiator functionality such as self-discovery and self-configuration. The products leverage an ARM(R) processor for enclosure management and extended SAS functions.

LSI offers baseline firmware including an application interface for controlling SEP functions. These functions can be easily customized to an OEM's specific application by using the LSI Logic Software Development Kit (SDK). The SDK provides all source code, the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) API, the programmer's guide and the SAS expander technical manual. In addition, LSI provides a number of supporting utilities for manufacturing, configuration and diagnostics.

SAS technology enables SCSI interface solutions beyond Ultra320 to the next-generation Direct Attach Storage (DAS) enterprise server, storage systems, and high-performance workstation markets while retaining device-level backward compatibility. The SAS standard defines a device-level enterprise storage interface incorporating SCSI command sets, serial point-to-point interconnections, dual porting, increased addressability and the ability to scale to small form factors. Because the SAS physical layer is compatible with SATA, users will have the choice of populating their systems with SAS or SATA hard disk drives, or a combination of both.
