Cadence Board Member Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli Honored With EDAA Lifetime Achievement Award

SAN JOSE, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- Mar 13, 2012 -- Cadence Design Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CDNS), a leader in global electronic design innovation, announced today that Dr. Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli, member of the Cadence Board of Directors and a co-founder of the company, has been honored by EDAA with the prestigious EDAA Lifetime Achievement Award for outstanding contributions to the state of the art in electronic design, electronic design automation and testing of electronic systems. The award acknowledges the many innovative contributions Dr. Sangiovanni-Vincentelli has made that impact the way electronic systems are designed today.

EDAA is a non-profit association. Its purpose is to operate for educational, scientific and technical purposes for the benefit of the international electronics design and design automation community. The association promotes a series of high quality technical international conferences and workshops across Europe and cooperates actively to maintain harmonious relationships with other national and international technical societies and groups promoting the purpose of the association. The award is being presented at the plenary session of the 2012 during the DATE Conference, held on March 12 -16 in Dresden, Germany. EDAA is the main sponsor of DATE, the premier Design, Automation and Test Conference and Exhibition in Europe.

Electronic design automation software is used to design complex integrated circuits and verify and test their functionality, which are essential to the creation of today's electronic devices. Dr. Sangiovanni-Vincentelli is a driving force behind electronic design automation ( EDA), having made groundbreaking scientific contributions and co-founded the two largest EDA companies in the field -- Cadence and Synopsys. EDA has become a key enabler of the electronics industry and provides the technology needed to address the ever-growing complexity of chips as predicted by Moore's Law, while at the same time reducing the risk of failure. Using EDA technology, integrated circuit design has gone from incorporating a few hundred transistors in the 1970s to present-day ultra large-scale integrated circuits that can contain billions of transistors.

"Whether as an academic researcher, teacher, entrepreneur, or technical advisor, Alberto is a true contributor and enabler of developing the circuit designs that are used in today's most sophisticated electronic products," said Lip-Bu Tan, president and CEO of Cadence. "This award honors his enthusiasm and tireless dedication which have led to an extraordinary career. I am certain that this is yet another milestone for Alberto, with many more to come."

Sangiovanni-Vincentelli currently serves on the Board of Directors of Cadence, as well as on the boards of other companies he has helped found. Leading IC and system companies around the world frequently seek his counsel.

An IEEE Fellow and member of the National Academy of Engineering, Sangiovanni-Vincentelli's honors include the IEEE/RSE Wolfson James Clerk Maxwell Medal (2009) for groundbreaking contributions that have had an exceptional impact on the development of electronics and electrical engineering, the 2001 Phil Kaufman Award (the most prestigious award in the EDA field), the 2009 ACM/IEEE A. Richard Newton Technical Impact Award in Electronic Design Automation (the award is to honor persons for an outstanding technical contribution within the scope of electronic design automation), and the 1994 Inventor Recognition Award from the Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC). The University of California at Berkeley has honored him with the Distinguished Teacher Award, the IEEE with the Graduate Teaching Award for inspirational teaching and the SRC with the Aristotle Award. He received his doctorate in engineering from the Politecnico di Milano, Italy in 1971. In 2009, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate by the University of Aalborg in Denmark. Sangiovanni-Vincentelli is currently the Edgar L. and Harold H. Buttner Chair of Electrical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley.
